Flashback: Nikki/Paulo
OMG Moments: They're buried alive!!!!
New Clues: It's old home week on LOST as Shannon, Boone, Ethan and good old explosive Arzt return.
Interesting that I was happier to see Ethan than anyone else... I think Ben's getting to me... ;-)
Questions:
Are Nikki and Paulo still alive under the sand?
- Yes, they are. And using my deductive skills and imdb.com, they will not die. At least I hope not. They maybe be flawed, but they did what they did for a reason, so they shouldn't be condemned right this very second. (Editorial Note: IMDb is a great resource, but its information regarding future projects and casting is notoriously unreliable. Take anything they say with a grain of salt until confirmed by sources other than IMDb.)
- Nikki opened her eyes right before Hurley dropped the sand on her head. Too bad he wasn't looking at what he was doing... So yes, she is alive for at least a few minutes after the end of the episode. How long they'll survive after that is anyone's guess.
Why did Nikki and Paulo go through all that elaborate plot for one small bag of diamonds?
- Because that one small bag of diamonds is worth $8 million, we're told.
Why, if Nikki's such a kick-butt chick, did she gasp/squeak like a nervous co-ed at the sight of Mikhail on the Pearl video monitor?
- She only kicks butt on TV. In life, her action girl skills are limited to letting Paulo poison people, and throwing spiders at him.
- Unless perhaps Ben was manipulating Juliet by letting her see him, trying to build a relationship he could later exploit.
Theories/Predictions:
- Nikki will survive, Paulo will not, or vice-versa. They will both make it out, but one will succumb to prolonged time without air. (P.S. I have no backing for this prediction. It just seems likely to me.) -L.A.

What About Smokie? Right before the spiders started coming out of the jungle you hear the sound of the smoke monster. What's the deal? Anyone have any ideas?

Dude, they were buried under like 3 feet of sand. I bet in a life or death situation your body would go all Hulk and adrenaline rush and you could push your way out of there.
Plus, remember all the hints they gave during the episode about guest characters? How they just die and stuff. Well they also gave some hints about writers finding crazy ways to write people back in and also hints about "coming back from the dead" (and I don't mean zombie style, I mean somehow getting out of the ground somehow). I mean, look at the pace of the show, even 3 episodes from now they could return to mere moments after they were buried and have Paulo push on out of there gasping for air. I mean come on, if anyone can do it the Lost writers can do it. (I figure no one will go with me on this theory, it's pretty far out there and unlikely, but I'd love to hear any comments anyway.) PS. Don't you like how before this episode everyone hated Paulo and loved Nikki, but in this episode they totally were able to make Paulo the likable one and Nikki the b*tch? Guess they just get off on toying with fans expecations. PPS. Could someone explain to me how this episode will make Nikki and Paulo "iconic" as the writers said they would be? |

I liked the episode. At the very least it reminded me how glad I am that Shannon is no longer around. It was fun to see Artz and Boone and Ethan again, although I thought it odd that Artz could claim to discover a species of spider and know without any lab equipment that every male of the species would come running when female pheromones are released. Minor point of contention, I know.
This episode really reminded me of the book 'Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead' by Tom Stoppard. That book existentially chronicles the misadventures of two bit characters in Shakespeare's 'Hamlet as they bumble their way through the more important scenes of Hamlet's life. Nikki and Paulo were the same, bumbling their way through the larger picture of the happenings on the island. I loved how they were the first to discover the drug runner's plane, the Pearl Station, and even have an encounter with the Others, but none of it meant anything to them because they were such shallow people. So long Nikki and Paulo! We hardly knew ye, and we really aren't the poorer for it. Oh well, it was entertaining to watch. |

I think their characters wre only used to uncover some backstory about the main plot (ex: Ben and Juliet in the hatch). I don't think we will see them again although their deaths were definately the most creepy since they were buried alive by the main characters.

After watching four great episodes back to back it came as a rather large disappointment to have to endure the boredom and tedious nature of tonights episode. I read in Entertainment Weekly that this episode would blow me away. They had the B right , as in Bore me away. The only redemption for this dreck came in the last two minutes when they were buried alive. Praise the lord. Oh but wait...will they be turned into island zombies now? You know that shark under the raft in the beginning of season two? I think that the writers had it right and knew what was coming...Jumping the shark...you bet.
