Trivia:
Theories:
#1: The Surreal of "Left Behind": One Question,,what was "real" about this episode? Nothing was. Like most of season 3 episodes,,this episode was an act of being surreal made plain to see by its obviousness. Time was again out of Kelter. The disconnected dialog seemed back in place with a vengeance. Locke not answering Kate's questions, Kate not answering Julies questions,,etc, gave this a episode a strange and Other Place feel to it. Smokie's reappearance definitely took this episode into the metaphorical. Perhaps the license plate on Kate's car was a clue to " where" this episode,, if not all of LOST is taking place: 40N DV8 is the license plate..I'm sure some will say it was DVB,,but for a mental strench,,just try it as DV8...Forty N Dee Vee Eight..its a tickle of the funny bone...Freudian Deviate. The original surrealists saw " mans unhappiness" based in the Freudian psychology of that era. That man was " molded" or shaped by inner and outer " forces" and how man attempted to deal with these " forces" is Freudian and the Surrealist co-joined the perspective into their perspective. So,,Kate as free will,,left to contemplate by herself , what the heck was she doing,,is abandoned by Locke( faith) and handcuffed to Julie ( Trust) to work it out in the jungle. As their struggle deepened,,Smokie's ( conscienceless) presence approached. Kate went beyond,,rose to the surreal plain, by over coming her disappointment with how her mother defined LOVE and placed Trust in a Surreal LOVE of doing the rite thing with no strings attached,,no quid pro quo,,no good or bad,,and brought Jack back to awake,,helped him up after apologizing,,and Trusted a future based in knowing the Love.
Sawyer was brought to the same point but by different means. It will be interesting to see who's new perspective will stick and who's won't...or maybe both will adhere to the new hopeful future.
