Anonymous Theory: Secret Weapon
My theory is that the island or something on it is a secret weapon of some sort. The Others are protecting this secret weapon from people who stumble onto the island. The hatches are a distration execpt for the "?" hatch. I believe Kelvin was on the brink to sovling a major clue with the map he made before he died. This could help further explain the black smoke AKA the security system.
Poking Holes: Why do the Others let them live? They can just kill the survivors to keep it safe.

Here is an idea: Why was the map invisable to the naked eye? Because maybe the "?" is someplace realy important....perhaps Jacob's place? A hatch under the shack or something.......Either way, whoever drew the map didn't want Dharma/Others to find it.

While I don't know whether the "secret weapon" idea is good or bad, your sentence above got me thinking on Kelvin in general. If Mikhail was to be believed, there was a Hostile takeover of the DHARMA stations by "The Hostiles" (Others). I believe Radinsky (spelling is probably wrong, I know) was a Hostile, not a true Dharma operative. There is no reason the Hostiles should leave him alone and empty all other stations. There was no quarantine, he lied through his teeth, therefore he's likely a Hostile/Other. So... the possibility that arises from this is that Kelvin was not his partner, but the last DHARMA Swan operative. Radinsky either came in and pretended to be the next operative for a while, or they used the Pearl to observe him for a while (Otherwise they probably wouldn't know about the map). Once they learned how the stations worked and what they were for, they methodically killed off the operatives, taking over the stations. Radinsky was posted as the new Hostile operative for that station. Either that or Kelvin never existed in the first place, and was just a fabrication of Radinsky to make him seem legit. -L.A. |

Yes, I believe it is a security system of sorts. Correct me if I'm wrong, it only shows up when you are near the ? location. When the Pearl Station was found, did it not have a big ? on it when it was viewed from the cliff above? How this security system functions is also a mystery. When near, you do hear different noises. It is almost like it is mechanical in a way. You hear what sounds like gears turning at times. Maybe it is just me.
