Hails from: Jersey City, New Jersey.

Before the island: A ninth grade science teacher. He was married three times.

On the island:
Arzt woke up when Nikki helped him get up. Dazed ad confused, he asks her "Are we alive?". Arzt built a shelf full of insects and other species in jars. Nikki came along, and he told her about the dangerous spider, the Medusa Spider. He said that he could become the next "Charles Darwin".

Later, Arzt warns Michael that the raft must set sail immediately due to the shifting of the winds. When he discovers that Locke, Jack, Kate, and Danielle are heading to the Black Rock to find dynamite, Arzt volunteers, since he knew how to handle dynamite. They got to the ship, and took out a couple of crates of dynamite. Arzt takes a stick and warns them about how unstable it is. Ironically, the dynamite he was holding blew up, killing him.
