I think that a big pharmaceutical company has made this island a laboratory of sorts and they pay for the food, the testing, the travel, the logistics such as kidnapping Tom Saywer, arranging for a flight to be found (if that's true) and arranging for the passengers to go on Oceanic flight 815. With all of the money they would earn should fertility problems be resolved, it would be well spent considering how many people around the world would use their meds.
