Who he Is: Dr. Pierre Chang, also known as Dr. Marvin Candle, Dr. Mark Wickmund, and Dr. Edgar Halliwax is an astrophyscis scientist who is the presenter of the Dharma Initiative Orientation films. These films include the Swan, the Pearl, the Flame, the Barracks, and the Orchid. He has also appeared in two videos shown at Comic-Con, one a outtake of the Orchid, and the other, shows him revealing his true identity, claiming it is imperative for people to recreate the Dharma Initiative.

In the Swan film, he told the viewers the importance of pushing the button in order to prevent another incident, and a brief history of the Dharma Initiative. He also said that the computer must only be used for the purpose of entering the code, and nothing else; communication was strictly prohibited, but Michael "communicated" with Walt. However, in the Pearl film, he claims that pushing the button has no significance, and is just a psychological test. Pushing the button was later proved to be real, after a system failure occurred after failing to be pushed, suggesting the real experiment was conducted on the Pearl.

Other videos he appeared in include the Flame, where once the viewer defeats the chess game, it causes a manual override, where he gives out different system operations, which resulted in Locke pressing 77, detonating the C-4 in the Flame, destroying the station. He also appears on the video shown at the Barracks for newcomers of the Dharma Initiative. He warns people about the security fence, which is used to keep the "wildlife" outside the Barracks. His last orientation video appearance to date is the Orchid, where he conducts an experiment which causes a rabbit to time travel.

At the 2008 Comic-Con, there is a video of the man who first introduces himself as Dr. Marvin Candle, but admits his real name is Dr. Pierre Cheng. He tells the viewers about the fate of the Dharma Initiative on the Island, and that all the members, including himself, died in the Purge. He manages to go through time to film the video, 30 years in the future, or the present. He says that it is imperative that people join the Dharma Initiative, and that time is not just of the essence, but it is the essence.

Pierre Chang is the father of Miles Straume.
