Just as with other shows of this type (X Files comes to mind) the minute anything is explained the show's over.
I think the writers pitched a pilot and had maybe a season's worth of story arc conceptualized. Once it was picked up and the ratings came in they realized that this could go on for awhile. They also realized that there must always be more questions than answers or nobody will bother tuning in to next week's installement.

I agree writers change the story at their will, like when they change the story to include the justification for torture, like many other TV series when the issue was discussed nationally because of the torture inflicted to Irakys by our troops during the Irak War, they may have a story but they will not hesitate to change it if the ratings tell them to do it, shame on the writers that do not respect the original Story

I am sooo afraid this show is going to try keep increasing the pace of excitement, passion, mystery, drama, betrayals and twists... then just end, leaving me feeling empty, disappointed and w/ tons of unanswered questions. Sort of like my relationship with that attorney I used to date!
I'm no scientist... but there just can't realistic, scientific explanations for all the "unexplained" things going on, some-- maybe, but all of 'em... no way. I love watching the show & I've got my fingers, eyes and legs crossed hoping it's not a big let-down! [Darts to her kitchen to pop-up some popcorn for the next episode].

writers/producers have already promised that it's not a "snowglobe effect" or it just drops the story. it makes sense. and i believe them :]
i think you've got like an anger problem and you're taking it out on my favorite tv show. |

As convoluted as the plot has become, this is the simplest explanation. This is a larger-scale version of the girl who was the buzz of youTube for a while. They're just trying to create/sustain interest in the show. Possible parallels to X-Files at this point: promises of a big conspiracy which only grows more and more absurd as the writers/producers try and play coy. I think the ending needs to be Shakespearian, or like a wester: big gunfight, 90% of the characters killed off, and a few survivors left to tell the amazing tale to a rescue party.

I've posted my own theory (the vaccine theory) on how the producers are going to explain the entire Lost series. But truthfully, at this point, I think the producers are just making it up as they go along. I doubt there's any clear ultimate plan, especially when you note recent rumors that the producers are actually holding MEETINGS to determine the end of the series... uhm, if this plot is as complex and predetermined as they've claimed, then why do they still need to decide on an end?

It's a TV show. Sawyer is played by Josh Holloway. Charlie used to be a Hobbit. Standing in line waiting to board the same aircraft isn't really much of a coincidence. Just run with it. I'm still trying to figure out the significance of No. 6's escape from his island (the Prisoner) but at least it's pretty clear his experience was an attempt by his former employers to see how much he'd give away after leaving such a sensitive position. If I wanted realism, I'd watch 24. ;-) |

okay, i'm a psychologist and try to follow principles of Buddhism, so lost became quite interesting viewing. while i watched from Spain, i was relatively unaware of the whole cultural phenomenon that lost had become. this is something that i found even more interesting than the show itself. i would agree with every aspect of the original poster's theory. maybe whenever the ratings fall off, the producers will pull a solid rationale for the series out of the bag, any kind of explanation that i can think of would either seem like a huge disappointment, or out of keeping with the magical realism of the show. as a species, we love to label, model and attribute meaning, in this respect lost has been a great sandpit for us to play in. if it does turn out to be an animatronic cloud monster, a big magnet and some social scientists with poor ethics, i for one will feel a little let down.
with regards to making it up as they go along. i remember seeing on one of the dvd extras that befere the pilot went out, the producers had the storyline for the first 3 years(?) mapped out. maybe i'm mistaken.....too much self experimentation. life doesnt have to MEAN anything to be enjoyable. |

As a former fanatic now heroes lover and LOST viewer I can say this is the most likely explanation. With the "Lost Experience" and other gimmicks it's very apparent that the show's plot is a ruse to bombard consumers with more marketing and ads. Sprite and several other companies jumped all over the Lost commerical bandwagon and even had ad space on the websites you were directed to for nuggets of info from the Lost exerience. This show clearly has no ultimate direction from what happened last season. They just haven't answered a single question and only given you more questions. They "others" are just becoming cheesy at this point with the writers insistance on making them ever more "mysterious" every time they appear. Enough brain boggling America has decided not to care any more. I think this show was an amazing exercise in psychology. It answered the question how long will audiences watch a show with no plot or meaning under the guise there is one and how many pop ups and ads will they bombard themselves with willingly to find said meaning. To me that sort of is the plot of Lost. It's a ton of people searching for meaning and finding life. As a viewer you want to know what happens on the island. As a survivor of the experience if they get rescued I just don't think they'll care enough to investigate they will just want to get back to life. That's my theory on the ending. That at the end of the day is part of what I think they are tackling. Existentialism, with that in mind I'm just no interested in half ass philosophy from Hollywood. Who in Hollywood can talk about the meaning of life with any credence, maybe Tom Cruise shoudl make a guest appearance and take that last breath of life the series has out of its lungs.

I think it dovetails very well with the commentary theory on the human condition, and the emptiness theory could be further validated by the huge number of buddhist references throughout the show.
