I think that many years ago scientists found this Island and understood that it has mystic powers. They set up camp there. Many years passed. Maybe 20 or 30 people started originally. They are sent supplies by someone they have contact with on the outside world. This person also sends them ANY info they need. Back to the island....They have several kinds of scientist, behaverial, ect...ect.... they study humans and thier interaction with the island, and different animals. That brings me to another point. Apon being on the island and making new discoveries, such as one brought up by....I forget the name, but this person suggeted that the island has some mystical regeneration property, hence why locke got the use of his legs back and some other things. Now I think they did some splicing of genes with the animals as well and do believe there is a large genetically created creature roaming the island. That being the main island. The "others" observe from there little island and occasionally take thier sub to and fro. I mean locke definetly saw something large. He was looking up into the sky at whatever it was and it definetly pushed passed the trees into the open. I think that the writers of the show should show us, The Viewers a little more respect and reveal to us at least what the hell it was he saw.
