“It’s All in Someone’s Mind”

In essence: A variation on the purgatory theory, with everything happening in the mind of one of the castaways. Or perhaps some sort of virtual group therapy in which in the real world they are all plugged into some kind of matrix. ''That theory is absolutely correct,'' Lindelof joked to EW, ''and the character is JJ Abrams.''

Support for this theory: Polar bears, black smoke monsters, people who aren't there and horses that appear out of nowhere would sure make a lot more sense if they're all in the mind of one person.

Poking holes: Again, it would rob the actors and the viewers of any real emotional payoff. Lindelof clarified in an e-mail interview at Lost-TVforum.com, "This is not a fictional reality that is playing out in someone's brain. To this I say, "Yes. I saw Identity, too. And I did not like it."

This theory received a shout-out, too, in an episode devoted to the premise. This episode PROVES that the whole thing isn't taking place in some one's head. The producers came right out and said that they put this episode in the disprove this theory.

What do you think? Have more support for this theory, or are you ready to poke another hole in it?

lostie8 Not in their heads - but still a fictional virtual story 9 May 14 2010, 9:01 PM EDT by Ms_Shadeslayer

Cuse only said it's not playing out in someone's head, not that it wasn't virtual. I've had a theory for awhile that we haven't seen the original crash. All of the Losties were in a plane crash together before the first one we see - and it created major survival guilt issues for them. I think in the original one a bomb went off, and the survivors are feeling guilt, anger, etc. Their playing a virtual reality game - "a very unique, special therapy" to get them fixed. But, the only way they'll succeed is if they work through it together. I do think they are in a mental institution on an island playing it, and the flash backs, forewards, etc. are a second part of that game. As, as bizarre as it sounds - SMOKEY actually could represents the evil crash they had, and their fight to overcome it. Just look at all the strange plane, bomb, crash, mental institution, psychological testing and game references. And look at all the crashes that happen throughout the off-island looks - they're just reliving things through the game until they're fixed.

It could be all in hurley's mind since there is a picture of an island that looks like the lost island in the psychologist's office in the "Dave" episodeItI

The book "The Third Policeman" has all the answers. It is referenced in season 2 orientation. My analysis is here http://brazilmike.blogspot.com/2010/04/lost-season-1-2-3-relationships.html.
Read the Wikipedia entry on this book and you may come up with the same conclusions as me.
