The bird is Jacob/ Cerebrus. Jacob can take form of images or memories of things from anyones past. (Ex: Kates Horse , Razinsky's cat , Lockes Father)

i don't know about anbody else but just seeing that bird alone would set me ona scientific expodition, its strange how the bird appeard in the thick of things and not at all in the rest of the series when nothing much was happening, a lot at once for some reason, i think this added greater depth to the island and its not all about the others, they are there themselves to figure out what is going on

While rewatching the first season on DVD, I was in the middle of "All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues" in which Claire and Charlie have been kidnapped by Ethan and Jack, Kate, Locke, and Boone try to track them. After Jack and Kate split away from Locke and Boone, directly before Jack's fight with Ethan, Jack beleives he hears Claire calling his name. However, I was shocked to recognize the distinctive sound of the "Hurley Bird" screech, and it clearly was saying "Jack! Jack!" Jack tries to climb the hill he is on higher, but in his rush slips and falls to the bottom, where he encounters Ethan. Does the bird have a relationship with the Others? If not, then what the hell is that bird doing, and why is he on a first name basis with the survivors?

I think we hear the bird at the end of the first season saying Hurley's name.

"I Heard the Owl Call My Name" by Margaret Craven is about an Anglican Minister who is requested by a Kwakiutl Village in Canada's Pacific Northwest to become their Pastor. http://www.amazon.com/Heard-Owl-Call-My-Name/dp/0440343690
I was kind of shocked to see it on the aisle display of Great Literature at Barnes and Noble one day. I had only seen the movie.
Hearing the owl Call Your Name means you are going to die.
When I first saw Hurley say that I immediately thought that this was what the writers were alluding to.
Lucky day

I believe that both the bird saying jack and Hurley is correct. It says hurley much clearer in my opinion, however if you read the books that have come out ( which are supposed to give backstorys of other charactures) there is a very rare ( supposed to be extinct ) geen bird heavly reffrenced all through one of them. I think it is the writers tying in the book and the show.

Its an in-production joke. While filming, they noticed a native bird that seemed to make the sound 'Hurley' and found it amusing. It was added in for that reason, nothing more.

I rewatched seasons 2 and 1 lately and I did notice that this bird made an appearance in both endings. In season one after the group, Jack, Locke, Hurley, and Kate, picked up the explosives form the Black Rock boat, they are walking back to the hatch and a bird flies out of the trees. The bird screeches and it sounds like 'Hurley'. In the end of season 2 the bird appears again and this time makes a more noticable appearance. I put on subtitles on at both occasions and while in season 2 appearance the subtitle says [bird screeche "Hurley"] the subtitles do not say that in season 1. Hopefully in season 3's ending the bird will appear and we will be given an explanation. please reply to this comment, I want to know your ideas

I think Hurley was joking when he said that the bird said his name, cause as far as I could tell, it only screeched, not saying anything...!
Did anyone notice otherwise?
