sorry but i think how smocke meant it as killing Jacob released him his slavery to him. He said it infront of all his new followers to make it sound like he was the good guy and they all were being forced to follow him.

I feel that Richard was allowed to stay young, as he said, "Jacob makes it so." When Smoky Locke came out he walked directly up to him, and said "Hello Richard, it is so nice to see you out of chains." Then he knocks him out and carries him into the jungle. This makes me to believe that when they first arrived there in the 1800s Richard was a slave to the Man in Black, and Jacob saved him and released him from his chains. What do you think?
