What we know...

	He has an amazing skin regimen! He hasn't aged a lick since the '50s. Locke asks Juliet how old he is, to which she replies, "Old."
	He answers Ilana's question. She asks, "What lies in the shadow of the statue?" to which he responds, "He who shall protect and save us all."
	He visits people off the island. Alpert tries but fails to recruit Locke at an early age and succeeds in recruiting Juliet to the Island.
	He makes Ben an "Other." He takes Ben to the Temple after he was shot by Sayid.

Mega Clues:
	In the Season 3 DVD commentary for "The Man From Tallahassee," Richard Alpert is described as someone who is not interested in leading the Others but who is influential in selecting the leader. Richard also can communicate with Jacob.

I feel that Richard was allowed to stay young, as he said, "Jacob makes it so." When Smoky Locke came out he walked directly up to him, and said "Hello Richard, it is so nice to see you out of chains." Then he knocks him out and carries him into the jungle. This makes me to believe that when they first arrived there in the 1800s Richard was a slave to the Man in Black, and Jacob saved him and released him from his chains. What do you think?
