The Fountain of Youth
Everyone on the island seem to never age. Evenmoreso, some seem to have been physically cured from any ailments they have had prior to arriving on the island: Locke's paralysis, Rose's brain cancer, Charlie's drug addiction, even Ben's back tumor (and by the way, how did he heal and was up & going so quickly?). But in the same token, some seem to not get cured, but rather get hurt and/or die: Shannon, Ana Lucia, Boone, Mr. Eko, Libby, etc. Furthermore, maybe that's why experiments take place on this island, to test the fountain of youth's theory and how it can be a possibility. This is also why kids are of big interest to the Others, because of their youthfulness. What better subjects can a fountain of youth situation have but...youth. And as with any experiment/s, to succeed you have to fail first. Also, things can and will go wrong, in this case on the island, they have. And as far as all of the "survivors" being connected to one another, well, that's another mystery in itself. Remember, all this....just a theory.

Ben grew up on the island, he's aged normally as has Alex who was born on the island. Our losties haven't aged because they've only been there a few months in the show's timeline, although we've been watching for 3 years. And after watching the season finale, it's very obvious that walt has aged 3 years, and probably why he was written out of the show. Arron has probably been played by several babies over the past 3 years, in order to show his aging and growth at a normal rate in accordance to the timeline of the show. The crash happened in 2004 and the losties have only been on the island a few months, so it's still 2004. Fountain of youth doesn't work. Obviously there are healing properties associated with the island, but that doesn't have anything to do with youth.

This may amount to a stupid question....but, was Richard (the dark haired guy in the blue shirt who gave Locke Sawyer's file) the same guy that Ben as a child met in the jungle after he saw his mother?

it has only been 50 or so days on the island, so no one would really age. ben and alex got older, and danielle certainly sounds older than on her rescue message. also, if their is, i bet only a few people can drink it like richard and jacob and stuff... they probably didnt tell ben if this is true..

There is a book, Lost Horizon, in which a place called "Shangri-La" is found by survivors of a plane crash in the Himalayas. It is a beautiful valley where no one ages, all people rise to their best potential, life is bliss. Has anyone else read it? The survivors eventually leave the valley - one is intent on nothing else but leaving - and go back to their lives. However, one guy spends the rest of his life trying to get back to Shangri-la because he realizes it was the best ever place for him. He does succeed.
