Personally i think that the statue was built by Atlantians, but perhaps more interesting than that is the brainwash video that was being used on Carl. Go to this URL:http://youtube.com/watch?v=nx4sqMHLtQM and then pause it at about 54 or 55 seconds. You'll see a collosus like statue towering over an island you should recognize.

I think that "Lost" is a modern telling of the old Sci-fi movie "Forbidden Planet" which is based on Shakespeare's "The Tempest". If anyone has seen this movie, then you all know what i'm talking about. The Planet represents the island, the ruins of the ancient Krell represent the 4 toed statue which implies the ruins of the ancient civilization of the island, and the invisible Id monster, represents smokie. In "Forbidden Planet", the Id monster was created by the primitive parts of the Krell's subconscious mind. They became so powerful and so advanced, they created a machine that can project matter of any shape or size anywhere on the planet by mere thought. The machine was designed to read the mind's of the Krell. The dilemma is that the parts of the subconscious mind are still barbaric, and since it has access to the machine, it created the monsters from their Id which destroyed the Krell civilization. A million years later, humans arrive on this world, explore it, and find the ruins of the Krell including the machine which is still running. The machine is located underground. Once humans gain access to the machine, the Id monster is once again set loose to kill. I believe this is the entire premise for "Lost". An ancient civilization lived on that island similar to Atlantis. These people might be the "missing link", hence 4 toes. They predate humanity, and were hence were more advanced. They probably became such powerful psychics or invented a machine that could solve all their problems, but instead were destroyed by that very creation, a.k.a. the smoke monster. It's the only thing that survived the fall of the ancients since it was the cause of the fall. So, other people that come to the island millenia later, they now have to contend with it, and all the other phenomenon that was left over by the ancients.
Write back and tell me what you think. |

Remember the brainwashing video that was shown to Alex's boyfriend (don't remember his name)? If you watch the actual video, about halfway thru there is a flash of a statue. Maybe it's the whole statue before it was broken? go here and its about at :54 or :55 seconds in http://youtube.com/watch?v=nx4sqMHLtQM

Scientist believe that in the future, humans will have four toes on each foot. Scientist believe that eventually humans will lose their unneeded pinky toes through evolution, because those two toes serve no purpose for balance.

Here's a theory. What if there's something important within the foot? Could there possibly be another hatch? "The Foot". I could just picture old Marvin from the orientation videos saying "Welcome. This is station 8, The Foot." What the foots for is up for interpretation. Maybe the task within it would be too observe the 2 stationed in the "Looking Glass". Sort of like The Pearl. I'd love to see how Bonnie and what's her face dealt with being down there so long. Everyone has needs... that's all I'm gonna say about that. Wonder how long they were down there? I bet Charlie came down and interrupted a party of some sort, and that's why they got so mad. I bet they wanted to be alone down there... just sayin'. They had to of liked each other somewhat. Think about if you were stuck down there with someone you hated. There would be harpoons flyin'. Anyway, sorry to get off topic. I'm a bit of a stream of consciousness writer. Or maybe next season another guy in an eyepatch will be seen walking out a door on the side of the foot. Better yet, what if it's Alvar Hanso himself is in there. The foot is his underground lair. I don't know. Your guess is as good as mine. Hopefully I'm one "step" ahead of the producers.

If we take into consideration the “purgatory” or Hell theory then,
It could be a statue of a Cyclop. In Greek mythology, Cronus feared the Cyclopes' power and cast them into Tartarus (the place of punishment in the underworld) where they remained imprisoned until Zeus (an Olympian and son of Cronus) released them. Also they say that Cyclops had 4 toes on one foot and 3 on the other. Or it could be something like Tálos. In Greek mythology, Tálos was a bronze automaton whom Zeus gave to Europa. Europa took him to Crete and he stayed there, circling the island's shore three times daily while guarding it. He threw rocks at any approaching ship. Talos is said to have heated himself red-hot and clasped strangers in his embrace as soon as they landed on the island. Maybe it was something like the “black smoke”. And maybe it’s nothing, maybe it means nothing at all.. i don’t know...i think that any of this would be too much. It’s not Atlantis, i don’t believe that! maybe they wanted to make the new Atlantis but still, it sounds too much... :/ |

I saw this on another site. Obviously Dharma is a Buddhist idea, in buddhism there are statues with 4 toes, but of animals. The feet on those statues can kind of resemble human feet, but not so human looking as the foot shown on the episode. Plus, no sandal. But I really doubt the theory of the Statue of Liberty, too Plane ot the Apes.

the atlantis theory is very thought provoking, first of all you refer to philosophers such as john locke and jean-jacques rousseau both last names appear in the series, and second, when you see the blast door map you see it resembles the description made by Plato about atlantis, its almost the same, and then the four toed statued...its just the icing on the cake, maybe as it was here that civilization began, assuming this is atlantis, then a very good place to start changing the valenzetti equation! think about it, theres a similar theory about that the island is the center of the earth where human civilization began, well then, imagine thats it not the center of the earth but rather atlantis, which is in legends the cradle of modern civilization today i really think its a viable..somewhat unexpected solution because it doesnt fit the plot overall but the connections are more than enough to waste a bit of our time discussing them ;)

The Dream
"You, O king, were looking and then, there was a single great statue; that statue, which was large and of extraordinary splendor, was standing in front of you, and its appearance was awesome. Statue. "The head of that statue was made of fine gold, its breast and its arms of silver, its belly and its thighs of bronze, its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of clay. Stone. "You continued looking until a stone was cut out without hands, and it struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay and crushed them. "Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver and the gold were crushed all at the same time and became like chaff from the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away so that not a trace of them was found. But the stone that struck the statue became a great mountain and filled the whole earth. (Daniel 2: 31-35) Is this an allusion to or the converse of King Nebuchadnezzar's Statue? The body is made of metal, but the feet of clay, easily smashed, causes the entire body to crumble and all the power and finery is rendered useless and destroyed by that one flaw. |

I think that the statue has something to do with some old Greek civilization. Maybe before anyone came to the island it was inhabited by Greeks, that explains the statue wearing a sandal and only having four toes.

characters have a way of "manifesting" what they read/desire (i.e. walt and the polar bears from the comic book, hurley and the food from the sky, charlie and the heroin from eko's brother's crash) -- desmond sailed around the island for two weeks before sayid took the ship out -- clearly desmond has a great interest in reading old british authors (i.e. Dickins) -- the four toes may come from a thomas love peacock (a contemperary of Dickens) story he was reading called "headlong hall" -- it reads : "Here you see is the pedestal of a statue, with only half a leg and four toes remaining: there were many here once." -- Desmond imagined it, and it became real...

I did some research and I think I got it. The 4 toes on the foot is meant to through us off.
I think it might be the god Avalokitesvara. Avalokitesvara is said to have 108 names. One it its names is Mahakala, who is one of the 8 Dharmapalas. Dharma is the doctrine of the religious and moral rights and duties of an individual. He saw that even beings who practiced Dharma were unable to escape from the Bardo realms (time between rebirths where beings may face great anxiety and terrifying experiences) and he thought that in wrathful form he could also protect them in that way. (www.khandro.net/deity_Mahakala.htm). Could his wrathful form be the black smoke? Also, Mahakala was said to carry a lasso, which binds those who break their vows. Eko broke his vows and was punished for it.

I once heard that our fifth toe is practically useless, and that as a matter of human evolution we may one day have only four toes. Sorry, I can't recall the reference point. Maybe the statute isn't ancient, but rather an homage to the next stage of human evolution.

The heads on Easter Island have long ears and large noses because that's what the natives looked like. Maybe the natives of Lost Island only had 4 toes.

Perhaps there was an ancient civilization, one with four toes, and a more more modern, technologically advanced army destroyed them and took over the unnaturally magnetic island to keep for themselves and/or their government. This sort of thing has happened throughout history, minus the four toes.

i think that the show is so complecated and so many details, what to remember,I cannot imagine how the producers could think to so many things and to make them involved to each other, there are so many crosswords to remember,i cannot remember all the weird situsations.I hope the end will be clear to everyone and that will make sense to all of these details and solve them up.

It seems fairly obvious to me that this statue is not old and not some view into the ancients who have inhabited this island. It seems fairly obvious that it is new (no weathering) and too clean to have broken. Plus we see Kate and Sawyer breaking rocks because the others are "building something big". 2 + 2 here does = Four.. OH NO ANOTHER LOST NUMBER!
