The Line is the place where the Others met Jack, Sawyer and Locke for the first time. They were attempting to have a prisoner exchange between Walt and Ben. Tom desginated the area, and warned them that if they cross the line, they would go from a "misunderstanding" to "something else". He says "This is our island. And the only reason you're living on it is because we let you live on it". He talks about curiosity, quoting Alvar Hanso. He reveals that they captured Kate. He demands that they have all their weapons, and Kate will be realised.

Later, Jack and Kate visit the Line. Jack starts shouting in the rain to get the Others' attention. Michael, who was missing for many days stumbles out of the jungle.

Mikhail also mentions a line when he was pretending to be part of the Dharma Initiative. He says that the Hostiles told him he can stay in the Flame if he doesn't cross the line.
