So
the Hanso Foundation wants to prevent humankind from eliminating itself. The
Dharma Initiative is . . . sneaky and mysterious. So what happens when you put them together? The "New World"
Theory.
The Hanso Foundation and the
Dharma Initiative are now operating together. In fact, they are not even two seperate
companies.
The Hanso Foundation's mission: to eliminate the "end of the world." Dharma is a sub-level of this company, and they are creating a group of elite people who will survive the
End of Humankind. The Hanso/Dharma goal is to still have a possibility of life after the predicted annihalation of humanity.
Their goal seems good; why not do it with less secrecy? At first the company tried this. But governments disapproved the tacticts used to bring people to their
camp(s?). Dharma, mainly in charge of recruiting new survivors-to-be and where to hold them, would often times take their people unknowingly, as in the case of
Juliet. The company told her that she would be travelling to Portland, Oregon - but that was a little bit off. So the government(s) that Dharma/Hanso proposed their idea to immediately rejected it, and are trying to crush its efforts. Therefore,
the island is used to host their "camps." This island, specifically, was chosen for its special properties: its apparent "invisibility," and how planes, ships, etc. are attracted to
the island.
The hatches - how do they fit into this
theory? The hatches were used as stations of communication between
the island survivors-to-be and the outside world's Dharma/Hanso workers. Pushing the button, for example, simply kept their survivors-to-be from losing their minds, as well as letting the off-islanders know that nothing significant was amiss.
The history that LOST has supplied us with concerning
the Hanso foundation and
Dharma Initiative include how the "Others" (lead by
Benjamin Linus) destroyed
the island forces of Dharma. But why did they truly want to destroy the
Dharma Initiative?
The Others that adopted
Ben at a young age convinced him over the years (or possibly the other way around) that the Dharma/Hanso Foundation must be destroyed. So, after the survivors-to-be had been "purged," (also known as killing them with lethal gas)
the Others cut off nearly all communications with the outside world. They effectively stopped the button pushing, although that was not truly their doing. The also prevented those bottles of information from reaching the outside world (remember the pile of cans in the jungle?). They have achieved their goals for the moment.
Now that all seems well for
the Others, they began to pine for a new mission themselves. They find it! Unknowingly, they adopt
the Hanso Foundation's and the
Dharma Initiative's goal. When
the Others destroyed the first
camp for survivors-to-be after the end of humankind,
they became next in line. The Others mission now is to recreate the end-of-the-world survival plan. Deja Vu, huh?
Planes, ships, etc. are attracted to
the island - it is inevitable.
The Others learned to use this to their advantage, luckily (or possibly
unluckily). Whenver a group of people land on
the island, such as
the Black Rock ship or Flight
815,
the Others choose their own elite out of the survivors of the wrecks.
Locke,
Kate,
Sawyer, and
Jack seem to have been chosen to be the "elite" of
Flight 815. Fortunately, as far as we can see, the latter three have been able to avoid becoming the newbie survivor-to-be's. Now it seems that
the Others and our favorite "Lostie Survivors" of Flight
815 are in a war for survival . . . and not surviving.
