It all seems very fey to me. I mean as in the OLD faerie tales, before Disney got hold of them. When Faeries were NOT pretty and nice, but were depicted as selfish and chaotic and considered humans to be amusing playthings... when they were in a good mood. Faeries were also, by the way, thought to kidnap human babies and young children because they needed "new blood" to infuse with their own dying breed, in order to survive as a race.
The Big Picture story behind Lost (and sometimes I suspect behind this dream we call "real life") is probably akin to some kind of huge jigsaw puzzle, and probably many of the theories stated here are merely pieces of the puzzle. They will make a coherent picture eventually, but only once we put them all together in the right order.
Other pieces of the puzzle may include:
- the fact that Faeries and advanced races "from space" have often been suspected to be one and the same (you can throw "angels" and "gods" into that equation, too!)
- the whole X-Files (and other movies'/books') premise that secret government organizations are in cahoots with the above, ostensibly "for our own good" etc.
- Also somehow the whole "Superman" premise comes to my mind again and again: wherein criminals from the planet Crypton were banished here to keep them out of trouble, but it all went horribly wrong when they got loose. I sometimes think the "others" may be these kinds of banished bad guys.
- also, remember, Frodo: there are other forces at work besides the will of evil. :)
Oh, yeah - did I mention that it's not just one jigsaw puzzle, but several that got dropped on the floor and mixed up. Still... the Picture is in there somewhere... !

Oh man this is like totally CRAZY. Now i am like totally going to pay more attention to these numbers cuz they are like totally freaky. Hey and if you watch channel 9 at around 7:30 you can see the lottery numbers and one of the jackpot numbers were like 481623 32. Some thing like that i am not kidding you. And almost every day there is a cursed number!

The numbers add up to 108, this number has a significant role in a group of religions like Buddhism, Hinduism that are called the DHARMIC religions.(see Wikipedia, 108(number))
Just a few examples: 108 is the number of sins in Tibetan Buddhism, many Buddhist temples have 108 steps, Zen priests wear juzu (a ring of prayer beads) around their wrists, which consists of 108 beads, and so on...
Now, could the similarity of the words DHARMIC and DHARMA be coincident, considering the role of the number 108?

turn dharma into numbers based on position in alphabet. "4,8,1,18,13,1" D=4, H=8 easy. Lost numbers: 4,8,15,16,23,42 Harder: Take difference between each dharma number and the next dharma#: 4to8=4, 8to1=7, 1to18=17,18to13=5,13to1=12 add dharma#and the associated difference# ie 4+4=8 8+7=15 doesn't work for next one 1+17=18 18+5=23 doesnt work for next one 13+12=25 Therefore, they messed up and the real lost numbers should have been 4,8,15,18,23, and 25, and then DHARMA would have generated all 6 numbers. However, 4 out of 6 isn't bad from a simple formula, and the 4 and 8 right from the alphabet position of D and H. Plan or coincidence? I saw the NEW YORK Yankees retired jersy numbers post-Maybe that explains all! Dave

In episode 2.14 "One of Them", we see the clock on the hatch wall spin down to zero and then show hieroglyphs in red. There are 5 glyphs and we only see 4. It is speculated that th 5th one is a spiral, so all 5 together can be translated to mean "cause to die" or also "to kill". This according to author Raymond O. Faulkner's book "A Concise Dictionary of Middle Egyptian", as quoted in Nikki Stafford's excellent book "Finding Lost: The Unofficial Guide."

RE: The Valenzetti Equation

"Maybe the others think they are going to survive the end of the world, and that is why they have so many animals, and are trying to build an eutopian society." I thought about this too. Remember when Ben made the comment that the Others were "the good guys"? It reminds me of M. Knight Shyamalan's movie "The Village", where the people build a Utopian society to get away from the "bad people" and the crime in regular society. In The Village, they hid their new society in a forest inside an animal reserve and created a fictional monster to keep people in line. The Others have built their "village" in the middle of a forest on an island, and there is a monster running around doing God-knows-what.... hmmm...
