Who They Are: At first they seemed to be a hillbilly-like band of island dwellers who kidnap babies and murder the castaways at will, but not everything is as it seems. They have their own town, secluded from the world in their island. They led seemingly normal lives, their strongest arguments coming from the choice of a Stephen King book (who, by the way, is a hardcore fan of Lost) for the book club. But everything changed when flight 815 of Oceanic Airlines crashed in their island. We know they took several of the survivors, including Walt and Claire for over 2 weeks. Their ultimate agenda is not yet known. But given their strange love for the underage population of the island, pregnant castaway Sun better watch out.

It is strange that in the first 4 episodes of season 3 that show more about how the Others lived and work, that the only ones who appear to be under 30 are Alex Rousseau and Karl, even though they captured practically all the young people from the two groups of survivors. This may be because the Others that these episodes focus upon are the Others who are on the "Alcatraz" island ("Every Man For Himself"), which is an "annex" of the island on which the Losties live, and which is, it seems, where the Others live in their "Otherburbia".

Questions:

• Which ones (if any) have really lived on the Island their whole lives?
  
  • We find out when he tells Locke in "The Man from Tallahassee" that Ben has lived on the island his whole life. But this might be not true, as at least for the last three years no woman conceived on the island (and newborn) survived ("One of Us"). Ben's mother may have been pregnant prior to coming to the Island and then gave birth to Ben on the Island, similar to Claire's situation. (We now know Ben was not born on the Island, but came to it as a young boy with his father, Roger, who worked for the Dharma Initiative.)

• Why don't they leave the island if they can get other people off it?
  
  • They love the island and it is their home.
  • Also, there is work being done on the island that we are not yet completely aware of

• Who is the big kahuna (head leader of all)?
  
  • Jacob? (Ben ominously tells Locke that "we all answer to someone" just after revealing that he is not the leader of the "Others.")

• Are they all scientists?
  
  • No, It is said that they were on the island before DHARMA showed up (In The Man Behind the Curtain Ben takes Locke to the large open grave of all the DHARMA employees and says they are his people. He explains to Locke that DHARMA was supposed to be working for peace, but "they couldn't even coexist with the island's original inhabitants."In a flashback we say young Ben meet Richard Alpert in the jungle, so we are to assume Richard and some of the "others" are those original inhabitants.)

• What do they want with the kids they take?
  
  • Perhaps because they do not have successful pregnancies.

Theories:

• It's possible that the Others are a cult, maybe looking for an Anakin Skywalker-esque "chosen one." Hence, the baby and child taking.

• The Others are a selected group of people that were placed on the island to survive mankind, which, according to the theory, doesn't exist outside of the island.

• These Others could be the original Dharma Initiative scientists, sent to the Island as a psychological experiment. Each of the Hatches representing another part of said experiment. They in turn could now be lost. (The "others" were on island before DHARMA and in fact "purged" DHARMA with a lethal gas resulting in mass death of all DHARMA people, except Ben Linus).

• The Others could be the descendants or original Pirates (They are shown with Richard to never age) who were shipwrecked on the island and have lived there ever since. The idea they are pirates is furthered by the fact that In the flashback of Ben as he turns on the DHARMA Initiative during "The Man Behind the Curtain", the hostiles/others, can be seen wearing pirate style hats as they carry the dead DHARMA bodies.

Who He Is: An Other who passed himself off as one of the castaways until it was time to make his move and kidnap Claire and Charlie in "Raised By Another". Shot and killed by Charlie ("Homecoming"), who was found hung and left for dead by the others previously. Ben has said that he was the surgeon for the "Others" before being killed. This is why the "Others" needed Jack to perform Ben's surgery.


Hails From: Allegedly, "Ontario." In the Others "town" he may be the plumber (he was working on pipes in Juliet's house when the "event" occurred). He was also be the Doctor/Surgeon stated by Ben.

Big Secret: He was kind of sweet on Claire. In the episode "One of Us" we learn that Ethan had implanted a chip within Claire that later becomes active and appears to cause her severe illness and potential long term harm.

Tom aka Zeke (Played by M.C. Gainey)

Who He Is: Originally thought to be the leader of the Others, Tom is just a member of the group with some authority. In "Maternity Leave" he is shown giving orders to Ethan, and when Jack, Locke, and Sawyer went into the jungle after Michael in "The Hunting Party" Tom acted as spokesperson for the Others. It's still unclear as to what his main purpose in the group is at this point. Until "Live Together, Die Alone" the writers referred to his (then unnamed) character as Mr. Friendly. We've briefly seen him in the third season, mostly with Kate. He makes sure Kate is alright and offers to get her what she needs. He is seen with Jack, playing with a football, during the recovery of Ben's operation. He is apparently very loyal to Ben. Judging by the third season, he is one of the kind Others.

Let Me Get This Straight: Caused the Lost world to wonder about his sexuality when he commented to Kate, "Trust me, you're not my type". Producer Damon Lindelof also said that we will find out one of the characters on Lost is gay.

Goodwin (Played by Brett Cullen)

Who He Is: Like Ethan, Goodwin was sent to pass himself off as a survivor of flight 815. He claimed to be a survivor of the tail section of the plane in "The Other 48 Days" and joined the group "lead" by Ana Lucia. When strange things began happening to that group, Ana Lucia originally suspected Nathan of being one of the Others, but after Nathan was killed by Goodwin, she realized the truth. After a struggle between the two, Ana Lucia killed Goodwin by impaling him upon a sharp branch. Ben later claimed that Goodwin saw Ana Lucia as "misjudged" and he had no intention of killing her. His back story is still unknown. He also had sexual relations with Juliet prior to the 815 crash - this leads to the thought he is a good other.

Ms. Bea Klugh (Played by April Grace)

Who She Is: Little is known about Ms. Klugh so far. When Michael was captured by the Others in "Three Minutes" it was Ms. Klugh that watched over and questioned him. When Walt was finally brought before Michael, he told him that Ms. Klugh made him take tests. What these tests were are still unknown. Ms. Klugh was also the one who gave Michael the list of four people (Sawyer, Jack, Kate, and Hurley) to bring back to the Others in exchange for Walt. She later freed Hurley and gave him the instructions to go back to his camp and tell everyone not to go looking for Sawyer, Jack and Kate in "Live Together, Die Alone". She also accidentally revealed Tom's name, who subsequently revealed her name to be "Bea". She is seen for the last time at the Dharma station the flame and is shot by Mikhail Bakunin.

Karl (Played by Blake Bashoff)

Who He Is: Very little is known about Karl. In "A Tale of Two Cities" he was locked in the cage across from Sawyer's after they had both been captured by the Others. He warned Sawyer not to keep pushing one of the buttons in his cage, but Sawyer didn't listen, resulting in him being electrocuted. Karl then escaped from his cell and encouraged Sawyer to join him, which led to both of them being re-captured. Karl is the boyfriend of Alex Rousseau. In "The Glass Ballerina", Alex asked Kate if she had seen him in a cage where they are kept. In "I Do", Alex tells Kate that the Others will kill her boyfriend (Sawyer) just as they had killed her's. This leads us to believe that Karl is dead, but it turns out he was only being kept in an holding area designed to brainwash him. Sawyer and Kate helped Alex rescue him. He has been hiding out in the jungle near the Other's camp. When Alex learned that her "Dad," Ben was sending Ryan and other Other's to the survivor's camp a day early, she had Karl run to tell them.

• UPDATE: The producers on The Official Lost Podcast said that Karl is not an other.

Mikhail Alexandrowitsch Bakunin (Played by Andrew Divoff)

Who He Is: Mikhail originally claimed to be "The last living member of the Dharma initiative." He claimed that he came into the Dharma initiative after answering an ad in the newspaper looking for people who wanted to "Change the World". Mikhail is the caretaker of "The Flame" station, which was seized by The Others after a war between the two dubbed 'The Purge'. At the fence of "The Barracks", John Locke shoved him through the sonic burst fence, which caused him to have a cerebral hemorrhage. They thought he was dead, but he did not die. Later, he ran into Desmond, Hurley, Charlie, and Jin. He said he would help save Naomi's life as long as he is left alone. He saved her, and ran off into the jungle.

• Let Me Get This Straight: Michail Alexandrowitsch Bakunin was a famous Russian anarchist, who came up with the concept of "collective anarchism" rather than individual one.

• Did Mikhail cheat death?
  
  • We find out that the sonic fence was not set to a lethal level. He never died. Although, in "Through the Looking Glass," he was shot by Desmond, but was able to escape and detonate a grenade to flood the room that Charlie was in, so now his fate is unknown.
    

Colleen Pickett

Little is known about Colleen. We saw her inform Ben that Sayid, Jin, and Sun had a sailboat and proceeded to lead a group of Others to take the sailboat in "The Glass Ballerina." Colleen then talked to Sun aboard the boat, saying that Sun was not a killer and that they [the Others] knew all about Sun. This resulted in Sun shooting her in the abdomen, which she died because of in "Every Man For Himself" after Jack was unable to save her. In "Every Man For Himself," we see that Colleen was married to Danny Pickett (See below).

Danny Pickett

Colleen's husband, who seemed very tender toward Colleen, while at the same time being very angry and violent towards Sawyer and Kate. He seems hell bent on killing Sawyer in Season 3's fall mini-season, blaming Sawyer for Colleen's death. He is now dead, killed by Juliet in "Not In Portland," which allowed Kate and Sawyer to escape back to their beach with the exhausted Karl in a boat.

Jacob

Who is Jacob? Apparently, he has a 'list', and Jack is not on it. Pickett refers to this as he's about to go kill Sawyer in "I Do", once Ben is being operated on by Jack. Mikhail once said that the leader of the Others is a magnificent man. He must be referring to Jacob. In "The Man Behind the Curtain", Ben showed Locke who Jacob is. They went inside a cabin. Ben introduced Jacob to Locke, but Locke didn't see him. Jacob does exist even though he can only be seen by Ben. If you watch the scene closely, you see him in one frame.

As Locke is about to leave, he hears Jacob say "Help me." This could mean that Jacob is trapped, or even imprisoned by Ben or someone else. Before they enter the cabin where Jacob lives, Locke discovers a strange ring of sand/ash running along the perimeter of the cabin's yard. This could be what is keeping Jacob trapped in the cabin.
