The sailing race was a race around the world that would last for a year. It is sponsored by the International Open Ocean Racing Association, and Charles Widmore of the Widmore Corporation. Desmond decided to participate in the solo race so he could win back his honor. First, he needed $42,000. He meets Libby in a coffee shop. Desmond shows the brochure to her, and she says she has a boat. It used to belong to her husband, David, before he died, and it was called the Elizabeth, after Libby's name. Libby offers the boat to Desmond saying that her husband would want him to have it. Desmond accepts it and says he will win the race for love. Later, at the Stadium, Penny finds Desmond. She asks what he is running from. Desmond says that he is going to be in the race, and that he is not running from anything, but is running to something. During the race, Desmond gets caught in a strong storm. He is knocked unconscious. When he wakes up, he has arrived on the island, and sees Kelvin, who takes him to the hatch.
