Jacob threw his brother into the creek and the brother floated into the Light Tunnel cave. Seconds later the Black Smoke Monster flew out of that cave and disappeared into the woods. Later Jacob found his brother washed up lying dead on the rocks. My question is: the Black Smoke Monster that flew out of that cave and disappeared into the woods, was that the brother-turned-Smoke Monster, or was it the original actual Smoke Monster that was living down in that Light Cave all the time?

I think that the smoke is a kind of Nanobot. So small and it's able to take on any shape. A mist or cloud to transport it. I read a book in which Nanobot's traveled that way. Mind you I can not remember the name of that book.

I think the the Black Rock and the 'monster' are the same thing if not connected in some way. For example the two types of sounds that it makes. i dont know about the first sound but i think that the sound of chains and metal clanking and creaking are not of a robot but of the slaves on the ship. i also think that Mr Eko was either once a slave of is being taken back as a slave or has some connection with the slave trade.

well, the other day i watched a documentary about electromagnetism.it said that sometimes people use the electromagnetic energy to HEAL other people!and as you all know, locke was cured from the paralysis because of the islands!that obviously explains that there exists a electromagnetic field in that island!and also the documentary talked about the thing that made me think about all weekend!the waves emited by magnectic energy, can easily get to your brain!and as you know, our 90% of the brain is VERY VERY powerfull that makes even see things that actually dont even exist!that must explain half of the things that happened in the island especially "smokey"!

well, first of all, i must thank you all for making so much sense!you guys helped me cure my paranoic situation...ok...has i was saying, the foot resmbles the colossus or rhodes right?so,i think that the island has some kinda connection with atlantis, because greek like population used to live there so they must have build the statue just for the same purpose of the colossus of rodes!to fall!buuuut...has you know geologists say that it was an earthquake that destroyed the colossus of rhodes!but, the mystery island has a electromagnetic force.so,it could be the reason why the statue was destroyed remaining only,it´s foot.as for the smokie, if you got wikipedia, and search for "black smoke" you will see that black smoke is a kind of chemical used by aliens in "war of the worlds",novel to kill all humans!and as far as i know, that thing moves!so aliens must have been in that island and that must be the reason why the dharma went there!to catch aliens!

Does anyone remember Locke explaining the rules of Backgammon to Walt? This was an immediate theme the writers were testing in the first few episodes. Rather than calling the pieces "black" and "white" he describes them as "light" and "dark". This has not really amounted to anby major significance as yet, which leads me to believe that it is still to come to significance. HOWEVR, there have been some hints towards this theme ongoing.
The backgammon game is a macrocosm of the battle on the island, which Locke did not even know himself yet. One player is light. One player is dark. This suggests a light v dark conflict non? Now, we all know the evidence for the Smoke Monster. (Its on this page!). I too support the notion that there are two monsters. I support this by citing Locke's sighting of the monster in the first few episodes, after which he says "I saw into the heart of the island, and what I saw was beautiful." Later he says of hte monster to Eko , "I saw a white light, it was beautiful." We haven't seen a "light monster" for ourselves... or have we?? In the episode where Smokey attacks Kate and Julliet and pins them under a tree, there are flashes of white light. This has been described as the smoke "taking pictures" of them. Then it fled. Now, I'm sorry, but taking pictures?? If all it wanted to do was take pictures, why would it come back and attack them again just minutes afterwards? That was no flash photography. That was the Light Monster fighting Smokey, to protect Kate and Julliet. Lighty saved them from being killed by Smokey because they have a part to play yet. In the season 3 finale, Walt comes to Locke and saves him. That was Lighty, coming to save Locke so that he could continue his work on the island. He wasn't the same scary walt that Smokey became to kill shanon. |

I believe the smoke monster comes from the ancient temple...I think that because Ben killed all of the original darma people he caused the black smoke moster to exist. The smoke moster is angry spirits...wait...let me back this up...maybe since the show is about change the smoke represents each character's past problems. The smoke might exist to help each character become stronger in a way, but then why would it kill a pilot?....thats a stumper...maybe it did that because it figures pilots are the easiest to kill.

well, i agree that there are probably two monsters, but the first time we had contact with the monster (the pilot incedent) , it was invisible and made mecanical noises that sounded alot like an old clunky clock. now its a big cloud of smoke and makes whispy and occasonally mechanical sounds. i think that the same monster that killed the pilot is the same one that took "pictures" of juliet and kate when they were hand cuffed to each other.
in other words, ther is an invisible monster and a smoke monster. |

I think the iron filings cover up whats really inside, which could be anything, for instance jacob. This is because maybe the "monster" cloud thing is sustaining his life. Besides, if it was biological, then why would the sonic resonation fence stop it. I mean come on, it didn't kill patchy then how can it stop a biological beast? Im kind of a tech freak and i dont think the nanobots would be a good explanation. if it was true then how was the hatch able to control it.

Just a note to say I added the longish theory at the top of the theories section on this page. All are welcome to change the formatting if it gets too annoying, I wasn't too sure when I did it, and I'm new here, so I had no idea what would be best.

Ok don't really know how to say this but, when they first got to the island locke was given something to belive in because he was walking again, he comes face to face with this thing and isn't touched. Echo also came face to face with it when he was devoted to a cause. But as soon as echo's ~faith~ broke, the monster killed him, I don't have the episode but did locke's ~faith~ falter before the monster tried dragging him down the hole?

several people have said that the smoke monster sounds like a machine, or a roller coaster... the sound effect used for the black smoke monster is definitely the sound of a NYC taxi cab receipt being printed... new yorkers will back me up on this... its an annoying sound that we are all used to.

Could the BSM be Jacob's (the invisable guy traped in the house) soul looking for help. I can't say how this ties into the things the BSM does. Just throwing it out there.

Could the BSM be someone's "id". It's a Freudian concept about the unconscious and conscious parts of the brain, you can wiki quick info about it. Watch Forbidden Planet. . .
"The id is the primal, or beastlike, part of the brain, determined to pursue actions that are pleasurable, such as eating or copulation. The prime motive of the id is self-survival, pursuing whatever necessary to accomplish that goal." Just a theory. |

In the episode Special in season one, just before Walt is attacked by the polar bear he is standing in the jungle and there is I believe some whispering going on and for just a moment you see a white smoke monster behind him. Any other appearances of this?

In the DVD commentary, the producers have openly stated that they took the sound that the BSM makes from their own recording of the ticker print out a new york city yellow cab prints out. So, mechanical sound, yes (literally) - something that should remind Rose of the Bronx .. . . well, sort of. Obviously the producers put that in thinking it was a classic "new york city sound", which it is. Unfortunately, most people from L.A. (i.e. the Lost writers) don't really get to the Bronx, or the outer boroughs (where I live, incidentally). So, they don't realize that yellow cabs are almost entirely in central and lower manhattan. In the Bronx, you don't hear that sound too often. Oh well, Rose's memory doesn't have to be perfect. Maybe she's a midtown lady who took a cab from Central Park to the Bronx Zoo. . . suspension of disbelief.

In the show "Left Behind" before the BSM hits the sonic fence, it came from two different locations and connected to eachother. It did the same thing when it left. did anyone notice that? Also, I noticed that the BSM sees a person two times before trying to kill them. The first time, it seems to examine them, and the second time try to kill them. Mr. Eko saw it twice, and died the second time.back in the first season, Locke saw the monster twice, but survived. The BSM seemed to take photos of Julliet and Kate, then the next day try to attack them, but was stopped by the fence. Also I think Shannon saw Walt (who could be the BSM) twice before she got shot by Ana Lucia. I'm not quite sure on Jack seeing Christian and Hurley seeing Dave. Please post a reply if you have more information.

I have a theory, although not fully complete. Could it be that the BSM is something that each of the losties had within them (whatever it may physically be) and the flashbacks are actually what the BSM has recorded over the life of the person? In other words - each of our losties has had his "life" recorded by something (BSM?) and it eventually led them all to one place. As we see the flashbacks - we see the highlights of what the BSM captured. Those 'scenes' in turn are of importance - to whom I do not know. Now on the island, our losties are able to remember these instances and tackle each scenario they face as they did off the island. They are perhaps being given the chance to redeem themselves for those instances in their lives - now being led to be either DARK or LIGHT (Black/White)....... I know it's a bit out there but, hey, so is LOST....
