The Valenzetti Equation
The Valenzetti Equation is an equation that predicts the exact number of years and months before humanity extinguishes itself. The equation was created by the Italian mathematician Enzo Valenzetti and commisioned under the highest secrecy through the UN security council. Valenzetti gave core numerical values to the environmental and human factors of the equation,which are:

The DHARMA initiative was started to try to change one of these core values, but the attempts apparently failed.
http://www.valenzettiequation.com/ is an additional site with a book by Gary Troup, author of the imcomplete Bad Twin, which Sawyer was seen reading the manuscript for. Gary Troup was a man on the plane and his own site states he was on the plane and is presumed dead.

Reading an article posted by Valenzetti's son at this website http://www.valenzettifoundation.org/wikipedia.html , you will notice that a fiction author named Gary Troup disapeared aboard Oceanic Flight 815. Conducting a quick internet search for this flight only produces hits related to the Lost serries. The "Oceanic Airline's" website http://www.oceanic-air.com/ states that they have cancled all activities because of the flight 815 tragedy. Obviously all of this was created by the authors of the LOST series to connect this mystery with the real world, and it is excellent entertainment! Although the Valenzetti equation is not real it is a very novel idea to have a 3 dimensional story such as this, I wonder how many clues internet hounds will find that are not aired in the show?
