Mental patients undergoing experimental drug therapy:
All of the Losties have "issues", most of which could cause mental problems - think of some of the criminal histories of certain characters. This theory would explain the flashbacks - possibly caused by the drugs - and all of the strange character connections like Jack and Desmond. The island is possibly the hospital or institution, and the Others are the doctors, therapists, and other medical staff. The island itself is not real, but a shared perception that the patients (the Losties) are experiencing as a side effect of the medication. The deaths of past characters like Boone and Ana Lucia could symbolize either their death in real life or their release from the "hospital". Notice how when each character had died, their "issues" seemed to be resolved right before their deaths.

The producers have repeatedly stated that this is NOT all happening in someone (or someones)'s head.

I like this theory! It reminds me of the book "I Am The Cheese."

There would be a heck of a lot of really unhappy fans if the writers did that to them.

Do you actually think that the writers would repeat an episode and make it the theme of the whole Lost tv show? Although this is creative thinking no way can this be plausible.
