"Time Travellers"
In essence: Oceanic 815 flew through a rift in the time/space and are now lost in the past somewhere.
Support for the theory: We haven't seen anyone from outside the island looking for their loved ones. Would a distress signal really play for 16 years with no one finding it? How outdated are the records in that hatch?
This theory got some big support at the 2006 ComicCon in San Diego. In response to a question about how long season three would take place (as one took 42 days, two took 23... interesting, that), as part of the response, Damon Lindelhof replied with something to the effect of "That's assuming time moves the same on the island as it does off." (If someone has the exact quote, that'd be great...)
Poking holes: The records may be outdated, but I know I'd love to have a washer/dryer as shiny and new as the set they have! We've met Alex now, and she doesn't seem to be 16. With the introduction of Penny, we know (well, assume) that someone's looking for the island.
In addition, anyone who has followed the commercials for the Hanso Corporation and visited the website will see that they are still up and running, and hiring. Why would a decrepit company from the past still be hiring? Perhaps they don't acknowlege the "lost" island anymore, but would that make it a time hole?
Also, yet another theory given a shout-out.
-The writers have previously stated that there's no "time travel", and the idea does seem too high concept for the show. So whatever they mean by time passing differently on the island, it has to be in subtler ways. As in: No Twilight Zone rips in the space-time continuum.
As an aside to the time theory, consider how the Lost story is being told. We are learning about the past of each character through flashback. Just as the film Memento uses a backwards chronology to illustrate the short-term memory problem of the protagonist, perhaps the way the story is told in Lost is relevant.

Dharma Initiative has created a "time door". One end of the door exists in present time in Antarctica. The other end of the door is the Island. However, the Island exists in the "time bubble" in which it remains in the past. Everytime someone (Desmond) pressed the switch in the Hatch, the Island was reset further back in its own time, while the present continued onward.
By nearly not pressing it, it opened the time bubble slightly, and Oceanic went through the bubble and crashed into the Island. When the hatch exploded, the time bubble was released, and accelerated into the present. |

The time theory could be a possibility, and one that could take them quite far. Initially, when the show first started I thought maybe they were near the "Bermuda Triangle" or something like that, but then I thought there could be some kind of time warp that the plane flew through, but that wouldn't explain how the "Others" had all of the background dossiers on the "losties". So brings me to thinking it's the island that is located in a time warp or something. Time is one of those subjects that is hard to deal with, and maybe the writers can come up with some story lines to meet the challenge. I just hope they (the producers, director, & writers) use this hiatus wisely & creatively, so they don't take us on a wild goose chase like they did at the beginning of the 2006-07 season. It's my favorite show, but it got way off track. So here's to a great & continuously improving seasons for the next 3 years.

If what the woman said was true, and the plane crashed with no survivors, the only way the island makes sense is a parallel universe. Somehow waves of reality with our dimension and the reality of this other dimension have merged causing the black smoke disturbance that the Darma people could not figure out and the other events such as the polar bear. The life experiences of our dimension have merged into the collective conscience of the parallel dimension so each plane crash survivor is remembering truths that happened to their parallel individual which never entered the reality of their dimension before. Perhaps the scientists from the other dimension were aware of something like a ripple in their universe, so they started investigating, and things have just become more complicated as this ripple has become larger to the point now where the situation is out of control.

I love this theory because they always seem to hint towards it. Originally I thought that they landed in the Bermuda triange and went through a time warp but since they are no where near there i dismissed it.
Then we see the episode where Sayid fixes the radio and he and Hurley hear this 1920's music. Hurley comments that it seems to be "from another time". Could it be???? |

maybe season 3 will last 16 days, then 15, then 8, then 4.. and the season that lasts 4 will be the last season.. and on the 108th day, something magical will happen.. like a flying a otter telling them they were all dreaming and that on the count of three they will all wake up.. and when they wake up they are on the plan to LA.. then all of a sudden theres turbulance and everyone looks around, scared, and then the turbulance picks up and then BOOM, its over.. and the lost writing comes up :]
