What if we are not seeing two separate parallels "worlds", but rather we are seeing (1) what would have happened if the the plane had not crashed (and how everyones lives intersected anyway) and (2) what is happening on the island once the bomb went off.

Maybe instead of being washed up on the island, he finished his boating journey and was then headed back to LA to reunite with Penny.
