Who is in the coffin?
Update 5/29/08 - Well, "There's No Place Like Home" has come and gone and we now know who is in the coffin. In the interest of viewers who might be a little behind, we'll wait a little while before plastering the answering on the top of this page.
Update: In the May 7, 2008 edition of the Official Podcast, Carlton Cuse states: "Well, the good news is, you're only going to lose a couple more weeks' sleep on that one because... we promise we are going to answer that question in the season finale." Get ready to place your final bets now.
In the season three finale, we saw a "flash forward," in which Jack read an obituary and went to a visitation of a mystery person.
From a transcript, here are the relevant lines related to the obituary/coffin (taken from the transcript at Lost-TV):
(at the fineral home)
DIRECTOR: Can I help you? JACK: Sorry I er. Actually I came, er, is the funeral over? DIRECTOR: There was no funeral, sir, only a viewing. Nobody showed up. JACK: Nobody? You sure? DIRECTOR: Just you. [Rather disinterestedly] My deepest condolences. Friend or family? JACK: Neither. DIRECTOR: Would you like me to open it up? JACK: No. DIRECTOR: Take your time. [Jack goes over to the casket and places his hand on it, tears in his eyes. He gets a pack of pills from his pocket, and notices he only has one left] JACK: [Mutters] Damn it. [He takes the pill, and leaves]----------------------------------------------------------------
(at the end)
KATE: Why did you call me, Jack? [Jack hands her his newspaper clipping] JACK: I was hoping that you'd heard. That maybe you'd go to the funeral. KATE: Why would I go to the funeral?
We can gather that Kate knew this person, and that for some reason she dislikes them, since Jack said that he thought she would be at the viewing, and she asked him why he thought she would be there, in a somewhat sarcastic tone. Another interpretation of Kate's response is that Jack, in his alcoholic stupor only thought that Kate would know this person, and in fact, she does not. In a December 7, 2007 interview, Damon Lindelof answered the question of whether the person in the coffin was someone we'd seen before with a "Yes." That date would include only episodes up through the end of Season Three. So, who was it?
Sawyer
Maybe, Sawyer and Kate broke up, so she didn't go, but Jack did because they were sort of friends.
Juliet
Juliet could have died, also. Jack would surely go to her visitation, and maybe he thought Kate would, in a denial sort of way, because they were both on the island.
Locke
Is Locke forced off the island against his will? And perhaps even rendered unable to walk again? That's enough to make a man want to kill himself. He certainly made enough enemies on the island that no one would wish to come to his funeral.
Michael
As seen in "Meet Kevin Johnson," his mother and Walt are distanced from him, so may not go to a fineral. The Island wouldn't let Michael kill himself because he still had unfinished business. Once he finishes his business on the freighter, will the island let him kill himself? Michael knew how to get back to the Island, something Jack wanted to do. The Obituary states that the deceased from from New York and survived by a teenage son. Michael fits that description perfectly.
Hurley
Possible, because we know that he gets off the island.
Sayid
Possible, we know he leaves the island. He seems to be doing dangerous work off-island... could one of his hits go wrong?
Ben
Possible, we know he leaves the island. No longer has any "family" to attend a funeral. Knew the way to get back and forth to the island, which is what Jack wanted to do. After all that Ben and The Others put the survivors through, Kate would probably not want to attend his funeral.
Charlie
When he died, Desmond or someone could have found his body, and gave a funeral.
Claire
Jack would go because he is her half-brother and was very close to her. Kate might not want to because she is taking Aaron as her own.
Walt
Many speculate that the coffin appeared small for an adult. Could it be Walt?
Someone Else
There are many characters that we've seen... who knows how important some of them may become. It could be anyone!
With the amazing relevation that we will have an answer to this question by the end of this season, it's time for everyone to rack their brains and decide who they think will be revealed to be in that coffin? The prize will be a nice, shiny Compliment on your profile for everyone who gets it right!
Things to Consider:
1. The Obituary. Check it out, read it over, but note that some say the producers are planning on rewriting it. No word as to what extent.
2. Characters up for grabs. Any character that we'd seen before the end of Season Three is fair game. You can choose characters such as Matthew Abaddon and Daniel Farraday, but Damon Lindelof is quoted as confirming that the person in the coffin was someone we'd seen, so it's very unlikely. Not impossible, of course, but unlikely.
Rules:
1. You must leave a comment in the Official Thread for your guess to count. Only guesses in this thread will be considered for the prize of a compliment on your profile.
2. You MAY place more than one guess, HOWEVER, only your FINAL guess before the time limit is up will count.
3. Guesses must be placed before NINE PM EST on THURSDAY, MAY 29, 2008. Guesses placed after this time will not count.
4. We reserve the right to end this contest prematurely at any point, due to any event that would compromise the nature of the contest (such as a wide-spread leak of information).
5. The prize will be a compliment on the profile of every user who makes a correct guess, stating how smart they are for figuring it out.
6. This page will be locked until the contest is over. If you would like to add a supporting statement for any of the characters, please add it in a comment, and a moderator will review and add it, if appropriate.
Good Luck and Happy Guessing!

This isn't actually about who's in the coffin, but something else that happens during that episode that no-one seems to remember. Jack is about to kill himself by jumping off a bridge. At that moment, a woman and her 8-year old son are driving towards him and they crash into his motionless car. He saves them. I have a theory that the woman was Juliet's sister and that the 8-year old son was her son. I actually don't know why I'm saying this, but I don't think we're going to see the last of them. That's all.
Oh, and to say I'm contributing to this mystery, let's forget everything I just said and say that the person in the coffin was Juliet's sister. :P I actually don't think that. I think it was Michael.

K, here is my theory, it is Michael, if you guys check the IMDB cast list you will see that Mike is going to be back, he is listed as a character in all of the episodes so far in season 4. My theory is that the writers are trying to relay a message that Mike is going to return in the fourth season. My guess is that Kate doesn't forgive Mike for killing ana lucia and libby, and for betraying everyone on the Island. Jack on the other hand still feel's hatred for Mike but because he comes back to help in season 4 he find's it fitting to visit Mike's funeral. Now some may argue that it isn't Mike because well, would Walt go to the funeral? Well here we go, WALT IS DEAD. Notice, that anyone who has appeared on the Island to our cast is known to be dead. Think about it, Jack's father: Dead, Bens Mother: Dead, Eko's brother: Dead, Hurley's buddy: Dead.

I think Juliet is in the coffin cause kate didnt like her much and Jack did. So Jack would go to her funeral. Mabye her sister died because of her cancer so no one else could come.
