We know Juliet is a fertility doctor. Ethan was, most likely, an Obstetrician and they knew each other in Portland. They might be brother & sister or married. Juliet became a fertility doctor because she can't have children. Ethan tried to get Claire's baby for Juliet and it cost him his life. Juliet blames those who convinced Ethan to go after Claire, possibly Dan Pickett. Pickett and his wife (now dead) are the two most militant of the Others and Ben is their overall leader. Juliet wants Ben overthrown so the Others can be led by someone, perhaps not her, who would rather welcome the Lostee's into their community and be more open with them. Ben has resisted this because some of the Lostees have exhibited a high degree of self interest in their past experience and are unlikely to fit in to a commune type existence. The Lostees' presence will hurt and possibly could destroy the community.
The Others are left overs from the DHARMA INITIATIVE researchers and perhaps some descendents of the Black Rock survivors. When the "incident" occurred beginning the 108 minute countdown practice, a large number of researchers suddenly vanished. The magnetic anomoly trapped these researchers in an alternate dimension where they can observe everything on the island but can only communicate using telepathy. The voices we hear are their thoughts as they watch. The "Others" know this and stay on the island because they think human existence will soon end and the island is the only safe place to be. They can leave if they want but don't want to. The Hanso Foundation continues to send supplies and they are building more homes for future Hanso executives who will soon flee to the island for safety. The "Others" might accept some of the remaining Lostees if they prove themselves. Those that don't will be food for the "Smoke Monster" security system. This is a device that is supposed to cleanse the island of violent people who threaten the peace. |

One minor alternate possibility. Ethan wanted Claire's baby for Pickett and his wife. They talked him into kidnapping her. Pickett is the one who zapped Charlie (he doesn't remember what happened), then hanged him after telling Ethan to keep moving on with Claire. Ethan never knew Pickett tried to kill Charlie and everyone thinks it was Ethan, which is why Charlie shot him. This is why Juliet blames Pickett for Ethan's death. Besides, she never liked Pickett's wife, probably because she was a really pushy Biyatch.
