Why they sail in circles, explains polar bears too.
If the island was located at the south pole, then steering due east would make you sail in circles, and the polar bears are simply home. The electromagnet from the philadelphia experiment supposedly created a massive amount of heat explaining the island's tropical weather. (possibly a bubble. The system failure, and subsequent screenshot of a polar station... hmm

didn't anyone ever point out to you that at the poles, it's either light or dark for 24 hours on a solstice? Since you're postulating they're at the south pole, and it's nearing what is the summer solstice in the southern hemisphere in LOST-time, it should never be night for more than an hour or two. Plus, the sun never really appears to be overhead at the poles, but it does in the show. And the other commenter is right about the polar bears not living in antarctica. Theory dismissed.
