My first love was areospace eng. I heard perhaps 12 to 15 years ago that a small amount of wreckage was located on an island in that area that exibited the corrosion consistant with a crash in the 1930's/40s. It was never ID as a Lockeed Vega, to the best of my knowledge. I think islanders found wing componants, but nothing else I can remember. ( maybe the program was NOVA on PBS, but don't hold me to that). Lots of things to keep in mind about those times...The technology/materials of that time were by modern standards, god awfull. A "modest" thunderstorm that today, in a tiny plane would not even cause you to loose your lunch would ripp the wings off of a plane of that time, although fighters/bombers were built stronger. Major points: (1)The tropics would break down the metal very fast, were not talking titanium here...(2)It's all most certain it crashed in the ocean.(3)Some suggested J. Edger Hoover requested A.E. spy on the Japanese. No way. Hoover trusted no one not in the FBI, or who he could not blackmail,the later applies to politicians for the most part.(4)If plane material was found,its most likely from WW2.(5)Last,sadly A.E.had a reputation of being reckless.But her efforts proved women could ferry the best planes of WW2,with out we may not have won.
