The cockpit separated from the rest of the plane during the plane crash. It landed somewhere in the jungle. The only survivor was the Pilot, who became the first known victim of the Smoke Monster.

Jack, Kate, and Charlie were the first people to visit the cockpit, not long after the crash. They discovered that the seats in the first-class section were either empty or occupied by a deceased body. They managed to reach the Pilot, who was still alive. He told them that the plane lost communications, and were thousands of miles off course when it crashed. Suddenly, the Pilot was grabbed by the Smoke Monster and was later found dead.

Later, when rescue seems to of arrived, the survivors gathered at the cockpit. At that place, those chose which group to follow: Jack or Locke. After the two groups split, Jack and Kate saw a helicopter, and a man parachuted out of it. They found the man not far away.
