Intro: With Dogen and the temple dwellers dead, the survivors and Ilana set out for the beach.

Intro:Ben teaches European history in a middle school where Locke is a substitute teacher.

Jack	Jack's with Hurley and Richard out in the jungle. Richard divulges that when Jacob touches you it's considered a gift, but that's a curse. He wants Jack to kill him because his life has had no purpose. Jack lights the very long fuse on some dynamite. "Now," he says, "let's talk." He bets that he was brought to the island for a reason, and that the dynamite won't blow. It doesn't. The three join the others at the beach at the end of the episode, where we see that Charles Widmore is watching them from a submarine.
"Locke"	Ben's grave is about 3 feet deep when "Locke" shows up. He tells Ben he doesn't want him to die. He's gathering a group to leave for good, but once they're gone someone will need to be in charge of the island. The clamp falls off Ben's leg. "Locke" tells him where they'll be and that there's a gun waiting for him 200 yards away. He runs, with Ilana in pursuit.
Hurley	Hurley lies in the sun, dreaming of cheese curds. Jack wakes him and they head off. Run into Richard. Hurley doesn't trust him, but they follow. Richard tells Hurley he's not time traveling. Jacob gave him a gift. He tells Hurley and Jack that everyone at the temple is dead. Richard tells Hurley not to believe whatver Jacob's told him. Then he marches off into the jungle. He has something to do -- die.
Sun	Ilana says she wants to find Jin. She doesn't know if she's supposed to protect Jin, Sun, or both of them, since the name "Kwon" was listed as a candidate.
Jin	Ilana says she wants to find Jin. She doesn't know if she's supposed to protect Jin, Sun, or both of them, since the name "Kwon" was listed as a candidate.
Ben	Ilana hands Jacob's ashes to Miles and wants to know how he died. Miles says, "Linus killed him." He'd said the smoke monster killed Jacob. Ilana puts a gun to Ben and forces him to lie face down away from the others. She clamps him and has him start digging his own grave. Miles tells Ben, "Up until the second the knife went in his heart, Jacob hoped he was wrong about you." Ben finds the gun that "Locke" left for him and holds it up to Ilana. He confesses to her that he chose the island over his daughter, all for Jacob. He sacrificed everything for Jacob, and he didn't even care. He says he's sorry he killed Jacob and can never forgive himself. All he wants is to be allowed to go to "Locke," because he's the only one that'll have me. "I'll have you," she says, and Ben trails behind. Ben follows Ilana back tot he beach. he puts down his gun and asks Sun if she needs a hand.

Locke

After hearing Ben criticize the school principal, he suggests that Ben would do a better job in the spot.

Ben

The principal asks him to oversee detention, a task he feels is beneath him and which forces him to cancel History Club.

Ben cares for his ill father, who says he wanted more for his son -- that's why he took him to that island, signed him up for the Dharma Initiative. There's a ring at the door. It's Alex, who's in the history club. On the island she was Rousseau's daughter, whom Ben stole and raised. And killed.

During a tutoring session, Alex refers to the principal as a pervert. The principal and the school nurse were having sex in the nurse's office.

Ben hits up another teacher to access the nurse's email account because he wants to find out if she has an inappropriate relationship with the principal. The teacher realizes he's going after the top job.

Ben takes the incriminating emails to the principal. He tells the principal he wants the job. The principal turns the tables -- Alex asked for a recommendation, which he'll "torch" if Ben blackmails him.

Ben passed up the blackmail opportunity and Alex got her amazing recommendation. He also got out of detention.

On island: Kate's walking along the shore with fruit when she notices on the beach Sawyer's clothes and
a book. She then sees Sawyer in the ocean, he says
"It's a hell of a book, it's about bunnies" as he walks out of the ocean toward her. Sawyer flirts with Kate which doesn't work. Kate walks away. He leaves and heads back to his belongings and he catches Boone looking through his stuff. Sawyer asks Boone "What are you doing with my stuff son?" Then beats him up. When Jack finds out he finds Sawyer sitting down and asks "Where is it?" Sawyer asks "Where's what?" Jack says "The inhalers that Shannon needs for asthma." Sawyer says "Oh, that." Jack confronts Sawyer for attacking a kid who's trying to help his sick sister. He says "I whooped a thief cuz he was going through my stuff." Jack's mad that Sawyer thinks the things from the crash is his stuff. Sawyer says "I don't know what kinda share fest you got going at the caves, but down here possession is 9/10ths and a man has a right to his property." Jack says "Get up!" Sawyer says "Why, you want to see who's taller?" Sawyer says "You really want to make this your problem Doc?" Jack says "Yea I'm sure." Sawyer gets up. Kate walks up asking what's going on, so they stop and Jack walks away.

Kate finds Sawyer to talk because he thinks they have a connection. She thinks that he might tell her where the inhalers are. She asks him what he wants. He tells her that he's got so many answers to that question, he don't know where to start. Kate asks him what does he want for the inhalers. Sawyer says "Ah, good question, hang on a tick." He tells her he wants a kiss from her, right now and that outta do it. She tells him, she don't buy the act and that he tries too hard. Kate tells him that she asks him for help for a girl who can't breathe and he wants to kiss her. She tells him nobody's that disgusting. Kate tells him she sees him with that piece of paper, the way he looks at it, how he carefully folds it and puts it in his pocket. She tells him that it means something to him. Kate says "You can play games all you want but there's a human being inside of you somewhere." Sawyer says to Kate that she thinks she understands him. She says "Yes, I think I do." He tells Kate to shut up. He makes her read the letter out loud to show her what type of human being he is. Kate reads the letter from a boy to a con man named Sawyer who seduced his mom and stole his dad's money too. His dad got angry, killed his mom and than killed himself. The boy only knew his name and one day he will find him and give him this letter to let him know what he did to him. "You killed my parents Mr. Sawyer." Sawyer grabs the letter back and glares at her. He says "Now about that kiss". Kate puts her head down, he says "I didn't think so."

Before Jack found out what Sawyer did to Boone, he was tending to a wound on the back of Sayid's head. Sayid said they were trying to find the source from the distress call. Sayid saw the flare from the beach and then the flare from Sawyer's position in the jungle, he then switched on the antenna, activated the distress call and then "darkness". He tells Jack that whoever hit him came from behind and that it destroyed all the equipment. Jack says "They're gonna figure this out." Sayid says "I will do whatever I need to do to find out the man who is responsible." Then Shannon comes running up screaming help for her brother Boone who is badly beaten. Boone tells Jack that Sawyer did this to him because Sawyer caught him looking through his stuff. Boone explains that Shannon has asthma and can't breath and she used up the last of her inhaler, they had four more but can't find them. Boone tells Jack that Sawyer had their book from their luggage so they think he has the inhalers too. Shannon's breathing is getting worse. Boone tries to calm her down. Sawyer walks past them all and he stops to get himself some water. Jack goes after him and says "Give me the inhalers, now! Sawyer says "Hell, I was wondering when you were gonna start asking nice." Jack starts punching Sawyer but he doesn't fight back. But Jack keeps punching him. Sawyer says "That's all you got." Jack looks up, sees people watching this, so he finally stops.

Jack tries to calm Shannon down and tries to teach her how to breathe, he tells Boone to keep her calm and walks away. Sayid follows Jack asking what will happen to her if she doesn't get her medicine. Jack shakes his head. Sayid tells him we'll have to make Sawyer give it to us." Jack tells Sayid that's what we are gonna do. Sayid tells Jack that he will do it. Jack says "I thought you were a Communications Officer." Sayid tells him that part of his training was getting the enemy to communicate, he then goes on to say "Just give me 10 minutes with him and he will give us the medicine." Jack and Sayid grab Sawyer and as they walk past Kate she gets real angry about what they're about to do as they walk pass her. Sayid interrogates and tortures Sawyer. He doesn't give in until Sayid puts a knife by his eye that Locke gave him earlier. Sayid was questioning Locke about who hit him in the back of the head. Locke convinces Sayid that it was probably Sawyer who hit him from behind because Sawyer has nothing to gain by leaving the island. Locke then gives Sayid a knife telling him in case there's a next time. When Sayid threatens to cut his eye out, Sawyer gives in and says the only person that he will tell is her, Jack says "Kate?" Sawyer says that's the deal.

Kate goes to Sawyer thinking he's just going to tell her where those inhalers are. He tells her he will be happy to tell her after he gets that kiss. Kate can't believe he's serious. Sawyer reminds her that he's just been tortured by a spinal surgeon and a genuine Iraqi, he tells her all he wants is just a kiss, he also tells her that she can't let that poor girl suffocate. Kate agrees and they kiss. When they're done Sawyer tells her he don't have the inhalers and never did. Kate slaps him and walks away. She finds Jack and Sayid and tells them that he doesn't have the inhalers. Sayid says he's lying and goes after Sawyer and stabs him with Locke's knife in the arm, it hits an artery. Jack sends Sayid to get his backpack with supplies to try to stop the bleeding to save his life. Saywer tells Jack to let him die, he has nothing to live for since he already made out with Kate. Sawyer says "If the tables were turned, I'd watch you die."

Back at the beach, Charlie is trying to convince Claire to move over to the caves with him. Claire would rather stay on the beach, she thinks it's a better way to get rescued.They start kidding around about things that they miss from home. Charlie can't believe being pregnant, she doesn't miss or crave any food. Claire says "Peanut Butter." That is what she misses. Charlie makes a deal with Claire that if he can get her peanut butter, she will move from the beach to the caves with him. Charlie finds Hurley to see if he has any peanut butter. Hurley tells Charlie that the food from the plane has been gone for a week. Charlie insists that there has to be some secret stash. Hurley tells him "There is no peanut butter, no peanuts, no nothing." Charlie tells Hurley that there has to be something because of the way Hurley looks. This insults Hurley and says "What man, fat guy hoarding the food." Charlie tells him, "Well we've been here for 2 weeks and look at you." Hurley says "What, fat guy hasn't slim down. I'm a big guy, it's gonna be a while before you want to give me a piggy back. And for the record, I'm down a belt notch." Charlie apologizes to him. he goes back to Claire, he tells her that she can move to the caves. Then he takes out an empty jar and they pretend it's peanut butter.

Sun goes to Michael and tells him that she thinks she can help the girl with asthma and asks Michael if he would help her. He later finds Sun with the eucalyptus and asks her if these are the right ones, he's not sure if he found the right tree. Sun looks at it and is very pleased and says they are good. Jin then comes out of no where and starts yelling in Korean. Sun walks away and Michael says to Jin "Don't man, I'm telling you, don't." Sun brings the mixture of eucalyptus and applies it on Shannon, this mixture starts to work right away on Shannon. Jack walks up to Boone. He tells Jack that it's a miracle. He tells Jack that after ten minutes of this mixture she starts to breathe normal. Jack is impressed with Sun. He couldn't believe he didn't think of it himself and he thanks her very much. Jin walks by and he
stops and stares at Sun. She turns away and looks at Shannon calm and relaxed and sees how relieved Boone is.

Sawyer wakes up with a bandage wrapped around his arm. Kate is sitting there beside him. She tells him that he's lucky to be alive. Sawyer asks for Jack. She tells him that he is checking on Shannon. Kate tells him that she read the letter again and again. She tells him she's been trying to figure out why he beat up Boone, instead of just telling him he didn't have his sisters medication. She tried to think of why he would pretend to have the inhalers when he didn't. Kate tells him that the thing that she keeps coming around to is that he wants to be hated. She noticed the envelope America's Bicentennial. From Knoxville, Tennessee. Sawyer looks at her and he tries to stop her from talking. And with pain in his eyes, he says "Kate." She tells him that he was just a kid, maybe 8 or 9 years old and that he was the one who wrote the letter. This letter was not written to him. She says to him "Your name isn't Sawyer is it?" Sawyer says "It was his name, he was a
confidence man, romanced my momma to get their money, wiped them out clean, left a mess behind." He tells Kate he wrote that letter with the hope that one day he'd find him. He tells her, the sad part is when he was 19, he needed
6 grand to pay these guys he was in trouble with. So he found a pretty lady with a dumb husband and he got them to give him their money. " How's that for a tragedy, I became the man I was hunting, I became Sawyer." He looks over at Kate and sees pity in her eyes. He grabs the letter back saying "Don't you feel sorry for me, get the hell out, get out!"

After Sawyer makes Kate go away, she goes and looks out at the ocean. She sees Sayid leaving the beach. She calls out to him. Sayid stops for a moment to talk to her. Sayid tells Kate that he can't stay here and that he is leaving and doesn't know for how long. Kate tells him that they still don't know what's out there. Sayid says "I have worst things to fear than what's in the jungle." He tells her that what he did today, what he almost did. he swore to never do again. He tells her that if he can't keep that promise than he doesn't deserve to be there. He tells Kate that he hopes they meet again, then walks away from the camp along the shoreline. While Sayid walks away with his loss of confidence for what he did. Sawyer walks over to the ocean, he sits down and leans back against a tree on the beach right in front of the ocean. He has with him his book, cigarettes, a lighter and the letter. He picks the letter up and he tries burn it. He flicks his lighter on under the letter. He has the letter over the flame for a while trying to burn his letter. He couldn't do it, he closes the lighter and stares at the letter that haunts him.

Flashback: We learn Sawyer 's background as a con artist. This guy is good, his sad tortured past as a child explains about his conniving ways on the island. In this flashback, Sawyer seduces a married woman named Jessica. He makes her think he is in love with her, but he is really pulling a con on her and her husband to get $160,000 from them from an oil deal that doesn't exist. He pretends that they will all triple their money from the deal. Sawyer takes Jessica and her husband David to lunch. But David is still suspicious, he even mentions a loophole. Sawyer pretends to end the deal with them to ease David's suspicion. Sawyer even leaves his share of his money with them overnight to earn their trust. The only problem is that the money is not Sawyer's, it belongs to this man Kilo. When Kilo finds out that Sawyer left the money with them, he asks Sawyer if he want to die. Then Kilo threatens him and tells him that he better get him his money back, plus 50% or else. The next day Sawyer goes to the couples home and is ready to walk away with their suitcase filled with the $160,000 from them. Right before Sawyer is about to leave, this little boy walks into the room. Sawyer realizes the couple has a son. Sawyer stops and stares at this boy. He tells them "Deals off. He then walks away and leaves their money with them. The couple is confused and Sawyer walks out quickly with no explanation.

Trivia:

The song at the end of this episode is called I Shall Not Walk Alone, the lyrics in the song include Mother Mary. Season 3 reveals that Mary was the name of Sawyer's mother.
The book that Sawyer was reading that was in Boone's luggage is called Watership Down.
Sawyer had $160,000 of Kilo's money, but he told Jessica that he had $140,000.

Intro: Claire and "Locke" get ready to infiltrate the temple, which Dogen is trying to protect.

Intro: ---

Kate	Kate goes to see her Claire, who's being held in a hole in the floor of the temple. She tells Claire that she took Aaron off the island when they couldn't find Claire. When the smoke monster invades the temple, she tries to get Claire out of the hole, but she falls in with her. They get out using a rope ladder, and Kate reluctantly joins the "Locke," Sayid, Claire, and former Others gang.
"Locke"	He tells Sayid that Dogen thought "Locke" would kill Sayid. He wants Sayid to deliver a message. He offers him anything in the entire world. The only thing he ever wanted died in his arms and he'll never see it again (Nadya). "What if you could," asks "Locke." As the smoke monster, invades the temple with a couple dozen Others.

The conflict only ends when Dogen's baseball rolls off the table. Dogen tells Sayid to leave and never come back. Later Dogen enlists Sayid to help him. Dogen says "Locke" won't stop till he's destroyed everything on the island. He is evil incarnate. He wants Sayid to kill "Locke" -- he gives him a sword to plunge into his chest. Why would I do anything for you? ask Sayid. To prove there's still good in you, replies Dogen.
Sun	Miles tells Sun that Jin was at the temple and had left.
Claire	Claire enters the temple and tells Dogen: "He wants to see you. He wants you to go to him." She's put in a hole in the temple, where she looks oddly satisfied.

Jack	He walks by Sayid, who's at the hospital to see his brother, Omar.
Sayid	Sayid shows up with flowers at Nadya's house. She's married, we learn, to his brother Omar and they have two kids. Sayid travels the world translating contracts for oil companies. Nadya wants to know why he hasn't responded to her letters, and her children find a picture of their mother in Uncle Sayid's bag. Uh oh... Omar wakes Sayid in the middle of the night to tell him he's in trouble. He borrowed money for his business through gangsters and is in a financial hole. He wants Sayid to use his persuasive skills learned in Iraq on the gangster. Soon, Omar is "mugged" and is in the hospital. Nadya pleads with Sayid not to take revenge and wants to know why he pushed her toward his brother. Sayid is tryign to wash his hands of the horrible things he's done, he says. He doesn't deserve her. Two men pick up Sayid and bring him to a restaurant kitchen, where we meet the head gangster, a man named Martin (who was also the mercenary Charles Widmore sent to the island). Sayid manages to take out the guards then Martin himself. He hears someone banging on the refrigerator door. It's Jin. He can only speak Korean.
Jin	He's locked up, bound and gagged in the walk-in refrigerator of the restaurant where Sayid kills all the gangsters.

Press release: Sayid's life is in danger after he discovers the source of the mysterious French transmission. Hurley concocts a funny plan to bring civility to the island.

On island: Back at the camp, Jack is tending to Sawyer's wounds that Sayid inflicted upon him. Sawyer tells Jack
that the only reason that he is helping him is because he feels gulty because he stood by and watched that damn Arab torture him. Jack replies that the only reason he is
there helping him is because nobody else wants anything
to do with him. Sawyer says "She does" (meaning Kate). Jack tells him to change his own bandages and he walks
away. Jack finds Kate looking around by the ocean. Kate tells Jack that Sayid has been gone for two days now and she keeps looking around waiting for him to show up. Jack tells her that Sayid will come back when he's ready and not to worry. He's probably just looking for something like the French transmission. Jack said he is a trained soldier and can take care of himself. Kate tells Jack that he's not looking for anyone and that Sayid left because of what he did to Sawyer. Jack tells Kate that it was just an accident. Kate says "Accidents happen when you torture people, Jack."

Sayid is sitting on the beach looking at a photo of Nadia and what she wrote on the back of it, he looks away sad and sees a cable wire and follows it into the jungle. He follows this path in the jungle when he gets caught in a trap and is hanging upside down. Sayid calls out "hello". The net gets cut with a knife and he falls to the ground. Sayid wakes up with a bright white light bulb over his head, he's tied down to a bed, he hears voices of people and a woman saying in different languages "Who is Alex, where is Alex?" Sayid asks this woman who she is and tells her that he doesn't know any Alex. She begins to torture him and Sayid cries out for her to stop. While Sayid is being tortured, Sayid begs her to listen to him and tells her that he's a survivor of a plane crash. He followed a wire on the beach and thought it might have something to do with a transmission that he picked up on a receiver, a recording of a French woman repeating on a loop for 16 years. She tells Sayid she can't believe it's been 16 years. She doesn't believe Sayid just happened
to hear her distress call. She tells him that she knows who he is and hits him in the face which knocks him out.

When he wakes up, he sees her looking through his things, he looks over and sees on a jacket her last name. Sayid calls her Rousseau. She asks how he knows her name and she calls him Sayid. She asks him who is this picture of with his name on the envelope that he carries. He tells her that the woman's name is Nadia. Sayid asks her who Alex is and refers to Alex as a boy. She still thinks he is an Other and Sayid keeps trying to convince her that he is not one of these Others. She thinks Sayid heard her on the transmission and came looking for her for answers, he tells her that she didn't know she was alive. She calls him a liar. She asks Sayid if there are other plane survivors. He tells her more than 40. She asks him than why is he alone? Sayid tells her he did something that he's ashamed of so he left. She asks him if Nadia was on the plane. Sayid said that she wasn't on the plane and that she died because of him.

This is when she starts to believe Sayid. She tells him that she is so sorry. She stands up and tells him she wants to show him something. She comes back with a music box and it has been broken for along time, it was a gift from her love for their anniversary. Sayid says "You mean Alex?" She replies "Robert," and it was a comfort to her for the first few years." Sayid tells her that that he could fix it for her but he needs his hands free. She gets up and starts sharpening a needle and Sayid wonders what she is doing. She asks him what was written on the back of his photo. She suggests that maybe he doesn't want to tell her because it causes too much pain, after that she injects him with a needle which knocks him out. When Sayid wakes up, he's sitting up with his hands free in front of the music box for him for him to fix. She apologizes for the sedative. While she is speaking, Sayid glances over and notices what looks like a map of the island. She asks him why he would fix this for her after she tortured him. Sayid replies that if he fixes her music box than he wants to know her first name and how she came upon this island. She tells Sayid her name is Danielle.

She explains she was part of a science team and Robert was with her. When he questions Alex, she doesn't reply but continues to speak about how their ship slammed into rocks on the island beyond repair so they began to make camp and shelter. They survived for almost 2 months, but when they were coming back from the Black Rock she tells Sayid this is when her team became sick, from them, the carriers. Sayid wants to know who these carriers are. Danielle says," the Others, they whisper." He says "What Others?" He asks her if she ever saw any of these people from The Black Rock, she says "No, they whisper". Sayid feels sorry for her and looks at her with pity. Danielle sees the look on his face and tells Sayid that he thinks she is insane. Sayid just thinks she's lonely. Sayid fixes her music box and tells her that some things can be fixed. She is very grateful, this is when he asks her to please let her go. She says no, than there's a noise outside. She leaves to see what it is. She tells Sayid that she hopes it's just a bear. Sayid says "Maybe it's the monster." She tells him there is no such thing as monsters. While she's gone, Sayid escapes taking her rifle and Danielle's map of the island.

They meet up in the jungle and have a stand off. Sayid tells Danielle to put the gun down. Sayid warns her again, she doesn't put the gun down. Sayid fires a shot from his gun. Danielle knew it wouldn't work, she removed the firing pin from the gun just like she did to Robert's gun. Sayid didn't understand this because she said she loved Robert. She explained that he was sick and she had to kill him. Sayid tells Daniel that he is not sick. Danielle agrees but tell him she needs him. Sayid reveals what was written on the back of the photo that Nadia wrote...you will find me in the next life, if not this one. This is when Sayid tells Danielle what it is like to hold onto someone. Sayid explains that the only way off this place is to go back, he asks her to come with him and that she doesn't have to be alone. Danielle walks away but also warns him about his people who he crashed with, she says "watch them, watch them closely." As she walks away, Sayid asks her who Alex is, she tells him that Alex was her child. Sayid heads back to camp. When he starts heading back to camp, he's walking through the jungle, he hear whispers, he looks around and than he keeps turning around to see if anything or anyone will appear. The noise of the whispers don't stop and Sayid starts to run.

Back at camp, people are stressed out. Jack, being the doctor is running out of patience when they come to him for common ailments like hives. Jack tells Hurley he has better things to do than take care of hypochondriacs and that things could be worse. Hurley disagrees and tells him that they are all tense and need something to do to relax and keep their mind off things. Locke and his new hunting companion, Ethan give Hurley some luggage that they found in the jungle. Hurley says he will look through them to see if there is anything useful. Inside of the luggage, Hurley finds golf clubs which gives him an idea to build a golf course. He shows the golf course to Jack, Charlie
and Michael. Jack can't believe Hurley built a golf course. Michael tells him that with all the stuff they have to deal with he can't believe this is what he's been wasting his time on. Hurley tells them that their lives suck and that they are lost on an island, running from boars, monsters and polar bears. Hurley tells them that if they're going to be stuck here, they need some kind of relief and just have fun or everyone is just gonna go crazy waiting for bad things to happen. Hurley was right, they all had fun. Michael was so distracted that he left Walt alone at the cave. He apologizes and asks him to play. Walt felt ignored and walks away.

Flashback : Sayid's past is a stark contrast to his current reality on the island. Sayid works for the Iraqi Republican Guard and is a Communications Officer, he tortures people. Sayid interrogates and tortures someone. Sayid Superior Officer Omar, is impressed and informs Sayid that he's reassigning him in Intelligence Division. Omar tells Sayid that there may be complications. Sayid replies that he is willing to make that sacrifice. In that moment Sayid notices a woman being held captive. Sayid meets with her and he realizes she is his childhood friend Nadia. Sayid 's order was to interrogate and torture her for information, instead he's having meetings alone with her and they would share stories and he would also bring her food. When Nadia wouldn't talk, Sayid was ordered to execute her. Sayid couldn't. Instead, he helps her escape by killing his Commanding Officer and shoots himself in the leg to make it look like Nadia did this
to them. He gave her instructions on what to do after she left . Nadia asks him to come with her but Sayid refuses
and said he did not have her courage. He gave her his gun and made her go. When she left, he sat down and read what she wrote to him on the back of her photo. After this, Sayid left the Iraqi Republican Guard to search for Nadia.

Trivia:

When Sayid is hanging upside down from the trap, he's praying a Muslim prayer in Arabic that is often said right before death to enter paradise and to not be tortured in the afterlife.
Sayid is asked who and where is Alex? It sounds like this question is asked 23 times.
He is also asked this question about Alex in French, Spanish, English, German and Italian.
In later episodes we see that Sayid has been to all these places expect Italy that speak these languages.
In Sayid's flashback, Nadia tells Sayid that nobody calls her by her real name, Noor Abed-Jazeem and that he of all people should know that.
The name Noor in Arabic means light.

Clues:

Nadia's name really being Noor is interesting because Noor in Arabic means light. She either changed her name because she was considered a trader by her people and they didn't consider her worthy of the name. She also knew they were wrong and she was the one who was courageous and good.
Sayid told Danielle that Nadia wasn't on the plane with him and that she died because of him. This makes no sense, he knew she was alive, that's why he was flying to Los Angeles because the ASIS informed him that's where she was living.
Right before Sayid leaves Danielle to go back to the his camp, Sayid tells Danielle about having just a thought a blind hope of that Nadia is still alive. Once again, this still makes no sense because Sayid was told that Nadia was alive.

OMG Moment:

After Sayid escapes from Danielle, he hears the mysterious whispers in the jungle.

Intro: Jacob turns up, visible only to Hurley (thus far).

Intro:Jack's father is still dead, and his mother is looking for Christian's will. Plus, we meet another member of Jack's family.

Jack	While on a trek to the lighthouse with Hurley, they stop at the caves where the survivors lived for a while, and Jack recalls his father's ghost led him there originally. Hurley and Jack get to the top of the lighthouse. The two adjust a contraption that controls mirrors which signal ships at sea. Around the edge of the device are names, most of which are scratched out. When they turn the wheel to Shepard, Jack sees the image of his family home in the mirrors. Jack demands that Hurley ask why Jacob's been watching him, then he goes nuts with a pipe and breaks all the mirrors. Jacob later tells Hurley that there's something Jack needs to do -- he just has to realize it.
Kate	Jack and Hurley run into Kate on their way to the lighthouse. She tells them she's going solo to find Claire.
"Locke"	He shows up as Claire's "friend" at the end of the episode.
Hurley	Hurley goes into the temple and sees Jacob, who says he needs him to do a few things. He says some people are coming to the island, and Hurley and Jack need to help them find it. The two set out, using Jacob's instructions to get to the lighthouse. Jacob later tells Hurley that he needed to get the two of them away from the temple because someone bad was coming.
Sayid	Sayid wants to know why everyone is staring at him at the temple. He wants to know what Jack is hiding from him. The pill was poison, Jack tells him.
Jin	Jin gets caught in Claire's leg trap. After she frees him, she takes him back to her camp. To save the guard's life that she's tied up and threatening with an axe, he tells Claire that Kate took Aaron. That doesn't help -- she kills the guard anyway and tells Jin that she'd have to kill Kate if she took Aaron. Jin changes his story -- now he says that Aaron's at the temple, so presumably he, Claire and "Locke" will be on their way...
Claire	Claire finds Jin caught in a leg trap and frees him. She's been out in the jungle for the three years they've been gone. Claire brought an unconscious Jin back to her camp. There he finds dynamite and a creepy crib. Claire brings back one of the guards and says she wants to know where they've hidden her son. The guard says he and Jin need to get out of there or she'll kill them both. Claire cleans up Jin and stitches up his wound. She's convinced that the templers took Aaron. "first my father told me then my friend" (we don't know who this "friend" is). Claire wields an axe over the guard, who insists they never had Aaron. She claims the templers tortured her. Jin tells her that Kate took Aaron. The guard just wants to be untied. Claire puts the axe in him. She threatens to kill Kate if it's true that she took Aaron, but Jin now says that Aaron's at the temple.

Jack

Jack looks at his appendicitis scar. While talking with his mother, she tells him he had it out when he was 7 or 8. (In the other reality, Juliet removed his appendix.) He goes to pick up a boy at school who calls him "dad."

Jack's son, David, just wants to "get through" the monthly visits with his father. They're tense and Jack's desperate for connection.

Jack's mother tells him that David was very upset at the funeral. She suggests that David's terrified of him. They find Christian's will, which mentions Claire.

Jack brings home pizza to share with his son, but the boy is gone. He goes to David's mother's house (she's away) and gets a message on David's answering machine that he has an audition for a music conservatory.

Jack goes to David's audition, where the boy is playing virtuoso piano. The father of another boy is there -- it's Dogen. He tells Jack that David has a gift. Jack admits he doesn't know how long he's been playing.

David leaves the conservatory, and Jack tells him he was great. David had his mother promise not to tell Jack that he was still playing. Jack was too into it, he says. David didn't want Jack to see him fail. Jack's father would tell him he didn't have what it takes. "I just want to be a part of your life," he tells his son that he could never be a failure in his eyes, which breaks the tension between them.

Who Killed Whom?

Many characters in Lost have killed people either intentionally or by accident. Here is a list of those and who they killed (alphabetical by first name).

Alex Rousseau (Dead) = Slaughtered Ben's white rabbit.

Ana-Lucia Cortez (Dead) = Killed the man who shot her when she was pregnant, which caused her to miscarry. Killed an Other during an attempted kidnapping of the tail section survivors. Impaled Goodwin (an Other) with a large stick. Accidentally shot and killed Shannon.

Ben Linus = Killed Locke. Murdered the entire Dharma Initiative on the island, including his father. His mother died at his birth and his father blamed Ben for her death. Killed Keamy, also making him responsible for the death of everyone on the freighter.

Bernard = Killed up to four "Others" when exploding dynamite as the Others entered a tent.

Boone Carlyle (Dead) = Hasn't killed anyone.

Karl (Dead) = Hasn't killed anyone yet.

Charlie Pace (Dead) = Shot and killed Ethan Rom (an Other).

Claire Littleton = Hasn't killed anyone so far. Responsible for her mother still being in a coma (she could have 'pulled the plug').

Danielle Rousseau (Dead) = Claims to have killed her husband, Robert, as well as the other members of her party.

Jack Shephard = Finished off Marshall Edward Mars after Sawyer shot him in the chest. Would have let Ben die, but Juliet convinced him not to.

James 'Sawyer' Ford = Murdered an innocent man, wrongly thinking he was the original "Sawyer." Attempted to kill the Marshall to put him out of his misery. Helped bury alive Nikki and Paulo. Shot and killed an Other in Season 2 finale. Killed John Locke's dad Anthony Cooper, who was the original "Sawyer." In "Through The Looking Glass" Sawyer shot Tom, and Other.

Jin Kwon = Shot two others that were shooting at him after he failed to blow up a tent.

John Locke = Responsible for Boone's death? Did NOT kill Mikhail Bakunin (an Other) as previously thought. Brought Sawyer to the Black Rock to kill his Dad, because he, Locke, couldn't. Killed Naomi with a knife in the season 3 finale.

Juliet Burke (Dead) = Shot and killed Danny Pickett (an Other). Couldn't save 9 pregnant women of the Others. Shot one Other from 1974.

Kate Austen = Killed her father, Wayne. Responsible for the death of her childhood sweetheart, Tom, who was killed by the police while Kate was escaping. Also killed her partner that helped her get into the bank so she could get the toy airplane.

Keamy = Shot and killed Alex Rousseau

Shannon Rutherford (Dead) = Shot John Locke in the head after she blamed him for Boone's death, but did not kill him.

Sun Kwon = Shot and killed Colleen Pickett (an Other).

Prey by Michael Crichton. Story centers on a nano-technology experiment gone awry; nanos appear as a black cloud with the ability to mimic any form they see, attacking their creators and posing as "others?" While the producers have stated that the Smoke Monster is not a collection of nanobots, there's definite influence.
Deus Ex Machina, Greek drama term, lost translation: "Hand of God". Greek dramatists often solved sticky plot or moral dilemmas through a direct edict from one of the gods; characters didn't have to make the choice or take responsibility themselves. Name of the episode in which Locke leads Boone off to his death after having a vision. This term can also define a person, thing or event that arrives at the last minute to save a seemingly impossible situation.
The Odyssey, Homer. The character Penelope might be a reference to Odysseus' wife, who waited for her lost husband for twenty years.
Green Lantern/Flash, DC Comics. Hurley was reading a comic book with both of these heroes in it on the airplane. Walt found it and read it often before it was tossed into the fire. This particular issue has Green Lantern and the Flash fighting innocent aliens and a master of magnetism. It is also relevant that the theme of Green Lantern comics is overcoming fear.
John Locke, Some Thoughts Concerning Education (1693) - Locke and Michael debate what is best for Walt with regard to growing up on the island. Michael would nurture or protect Walt against hardship, while Locke counsels that while they are on the island, Walt should be given every opportunity to inure and prepare himself against the dangers of the island. In Thoughts, John Locke proposes that excesses and pampering are inappropriate to the constitution of a future citizen, and that practical skills should be taught and repeated as early in life as possible.
George Orwell, 1984 (1949). The presence of monitors and viewscreens in The Swan, The Pearl, and The Hydra, and the associated implications of being at all times watched fit neatly into Orwell's reservations about the future of technology and of humanity.
Jeremy Bentham, Panopticon (1787). Eighteenth-century social philosopher's manual on a potential model for prison reform. He proposes a structure oriented in such a way that all prisoners are visible to prison guards at all times.
Michel Foucault, Discipline and Punish (1975). French philosopher's theory that from the spectacular punishments of the middle ages and renaissance, the passage of time has witnessed a self-governing society based in the fear of punishment that is rarely ever executed. From birth, people are interpellated into a culture that instills the fear, not only of being always watched, but turns people into their own prison guards.
Daniel Defoe, Robinson Crusoe (1719). Based loosely on the tale of Scotsman Alexander Selkirk, it is the story of an average middle-class Englishman who finds himself shipwrecked on an uncharted island. Here, he recapitulates the development of human society. He institutes systems of agriculture, architecture, and husbandry, along with imposing the idea of property and ownership to a supposedly uninhabited island. Establishing himself, he later establishes social institutions and controls over an aboriginal figure, as well as over a group of likewise stranded Europeans.
Edmund Burke, Juliet's husband, is also the name of the English philosopher (1729-1797) known as the father of modern conservatism.
Mikhail Bakunin is also the name of the father of political anarchism (1814-1876). "The passion for destruction is a creative passion."
Animal Farm, George Orwell. Arzt's quote of "The pigs are walking" in "Expose" is a reference to this novel.
The Epic of Gilgamesh; John Locke fills in the name Gilgamesh for the statement Enkidu's friend while in the hatch during "Collision."
"Expose" really reminded me of the book 'Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead' by Tom Stoppard. That book existentially chronicles the misadventures of two bit characters in Shakespeare's 'Hamlet as they bumble their way through the more important scenes of Hamlet's life. Nikki and Paulo were the same, bumbling their way through the larger picture of the happenings on the island. I loved how they were the first to discover the drug runner's plane, the Pearl Station, and even have an encounter with the Others, but none of it meant anything to them because they were such shallow people.
Ethan from the Others has the last name of Rom (Ethan Rom), alluding to Ethan Frome, a novel by Edith Wharton.
Huis Clos (1944), a play by existentialist philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, features three of the recently deceased housed together in Hell. They discover that they are expected, and in the end, fated, to torture each other. The play's title is typically translated in English as No Exit. Considering that two different characters in Ep 3x19 "The Brig" claim that everyone who was on board Flight 815 is dead, the allusion seems to be particularly relevant.
From wikipedia, Benjamin could mean "son of my pain", in reference to the Bible, where Benjamin's mother Rachel died just after she gave birth.
Jacob means "cheater". This could make Jacob Prometheus, who tried to cheat Zeus, and was constrained by Zeus to a mountain summit.
The Moon Pool, A. Merritt. Classic pulp scifi/fantasy novel concerning the strange adventures of the botanist Dr. Walter Goodwin on mysterious, otherworldly islands in the South Pacific (this character shares his name with the Other known as Goodwin).
The Pearl is a novel by John Steinbeck in which a Mexican Indian couple discovers the Pearl of the world and is consequently corrupted by it. This is also the name of one of the hatches.
"The Shape of Things To Come" is the title of an H.G. Wells novel. It is referred to as a "fictional history," detailing a speculative future of almost 200 years.
Everything That Rises Must Converge by Flannery O'Conner is being read by Jacob at the moment Locke is thrown from the window by his father. Interestingly enough, despite it appearing in Jacob's hands as a novel, it is actually a short story of only fourteen pages, and is ultimately a take on black versus white (which dovetails with the whole backgammon theme). Perhaps the title itself is most applicable to the storyline for obvious reasons.

The Four-Toed Statue

After viewing the last episode and getting to see the statue from the side I did some research into ancient Egyptian gods. And I found the identity of it. The statue is of the Egyptian god Sobek. Sobek was a Nile god and his appearance is that of a man with the head of a crocodile with a headdress of feathers and a sun disk atop it. Sobek was connected with the Nile and protected the king. As we saw in the last episode Jacob aparently lives beneath the statue and he does appear to be the main ruling entity and protector of the island.

The Four Toed Statue

In the last episode of Season Two ("Live Together, Die Alone"), the crew aboard Desmond's sailboat -- Sayid, Jin and Sun -- sail around the island toward the Others camp. On the way they pass the ominous and mysterious four-toed statue on the beach. Sayid comments that he's not sure which is more disturbing - - that the rest of the statue is missing, or that it only has four toes.

While time travelling, Sawyer, Juliet, Miles, and Jin saw a statue which is presumed to be the four-toed statue. The statue, which was seen from behind, appears to be that of an Egyptian god.

In the Season 5 finale, it is revealed that Jacob lives inside the statue.

Theories: The foot has a sandal on it, which gives a Roman or Greek feeling to it, which means it presumably predates any current life on the island. Perhaps it signifies a previous civilization on the island which was eventually destroyed, which means it is part of the "Palimpsest" nature of the island multiple layers, with different parts of different layers visible at the same time.

The four toed statue may represent the ancient history on the island and it could be related to Adam and Eve or other people of ancient texts. We don't know who built it or why it only has four toes but we should find out before the series ends.

One theory is that it is the actual Statue of Liberty foot. From the angle Sayid saw the foot he would have only seen the first 4 toes. The pinky toe on the Statue of Liberty for some reason or another is recessed. However this can be disclaimed because the The Statue of Liberty feet are almost covered by her robe; while there is no remnant of a robe here. Of course , there could be an as yet undiscovered amount of time to have weathered away the robe, so that may be irrelevant.

Some people believe the foot of the statue to be that of The Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. This is supported by the fact that the statue broke apart at the knees and fell into the water where it stood and may have

had only four toes. No parts of the statue have ever been found, although some claim they found stones originally a part of the statue.

Significance of the numbers 4 and 8: Four toes on each foot equals eight. See reference to bagua in Dharma Initiative. Also the 4 toes may refer to the "4", which is the first number in the progression of numbers that won the lottery for Hurley and were on the Hatch and release the charge via the computer in the hatch.

Do the Others have 4 toes?
There have also been theories about the Others having 4 toes. There are some shots in "Live Together, Die Alone" that may prove that theory. If they do have 4 toes, did the others do experiments on themselves? Did they get "sick" or were they born with disfigured feet like that? 4 is also a "LOST number" and 4 + 4 (two feet) is 8 (another LOST number). Is the 4 toes a right of passage into adulthood where the new member of the tribe must cut off her own toe to become a full member?

Literary references: Some have suggested this statue looks Greek. Plato, a Greek philosopher, wrote about a lost civilization he called Atlantis. Could the island be Atlantis? (Atlantis was most likely an early civilization near Crete, not thousands of miles away in the unknown Pacific - a more likely proposition would be Mu, otherwise known as Lemuria) It also resembles the mythical "Colossus of Rhodes." Suggested reading: 'Headlong Hall' by Thomas Love Peacock for its mention of four-toed statue remnants (see Annonymous post below) and philosophers John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Read the novel "Headlong Hall" here.

The statue could also reference the famous poem "Ozymandias," by Percy Bysshe Shelley, which describes the ancient ruined monument of a forgotten king. The monument's huge legs remain, in addition to its head, which bears a look of scorn. "Ozymandias" ends with these lines:

And on the pedestal these words appear: "My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!" Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away.

The irony is obvious.Could The Others have destroyed the previous civilization or ruler? Maybe the foot is a clue to their roots.

The foot also has an Easter Island feel to it. Remember that some of the statues (Moai) on Easter Island are found very near the water, just like the Colossus of Rhodes as previously mentioned.

It may be a reference to the DELL comic book series TARZAN which had a character named KUNAH that had only four toes on his left foot. He was an albino reincarnated as an elephant - similar to the white polar bear. I found this reference at ERBzine.com in honor of the writer Edgar Burroughs. The two comic books that this character appeared in started with 15 and 16 (1575 & 1690.)

Other possibilities:

-There may not be a history to the statue. It may just be a large prop or partial statue that was brought to The Island to fool certain inhabitants or those arriving to the island into thinking The Island is something that it's not, like Atlantis.

-Perhaps it was a statue of Jacob, who may have 4 toes on his left foot. In which case Jacob has been around a long time. Perhaps he is immortal.
-one, he died ( i explained why on other thing very long) and two, its an egiptian hipo woman statue

What is the significance of the statue? Maybe this is a sign of a previous civilization that existed in the island before. It once again tells the survivors that they are not alone and there is a feeling of something superior taking place, something that is above them, something they cannot control.

Is it linked to the Others?
Or is it more related to "Adam and Eve"?

I think the statue is a ruse or trick. It was never any bigger than it is now -- it's always just been a foot. It's there to make people THINK there used to be a full statue. I'll say the Others created it for some psychological test.

I feel that the four toed statue just tells us that the island, once upon a time belonged to a greater body of land and due to environmental changes and the volcano the land attached and became an island. It means it has been there for a very long time. I also feel that we will know by the end of LOST the meaning of the statue, which was once a full statue, but due to what I said before and wars this is all that is left. Kind of like the Venus de Milo, but much older. The island or area has always been inhabited.

I believe that the statue has somethiing to do with the Greeks, and that maybe a Greek god was chosen to watch the island? Maybe it is a reference, stating that greek god are sharing the samer personalities as the Survivors? Jack could be a Zeus figure, maybe Sawyer would be an Ares figure? I hope that by the end of the show, we will discover what the statue means!

Jack	His name is scratched into the cave that "Locke" shows Sawyer. His name is there, along with those of Hurley, Sayid, Sawyer, and Sun or Jin (they share a last name).
"Locke"	"Locke" seeks out Sawyer, who demands to know who this is. "I'm the person who can answer the most important question in the world: Why are you on this island." He offers to prove that it wasn't just chance. Along the way they twice see an adolescent boy. The second time the boy says, "You know the rules. You can't kill him." "Don't tell me what I can't do!" replies "Locke." The two go to a cliff, where they climb ladders (which snap) to get to a cave that "Locke" claims was Jacob's lair. On the walls are scratched hundreds of names, most of which are crossed out. The only ones left are Shepherd, Reyes, Jurrah, Kwon, Locke, Ford (Sawyer).
Sawyer	While drowning his sorrows in the home he shared with Juliet, "Locke" comes by and promises to reveal why Sawyer's on the island. En route to the cave, Richard finds Sawyer and tells him "Locke" wants everyone dead. Sawyer pulls a gun on "Locke," who tells him he's trapped, he doesn't know what it's like to be free. "It would be such a shame to turn back now," says "Locke." Sawyer's name (Ford) is among those designated in the cave as potential island protector. "Locke" says that you can do nothing, accept the job, or just leave. "Locke" suggests they leave together. "Are you ready to go home?" he asks. "Hell yes," Sawyer says.
Sun	She insists they bury Locke and not leave him to decompose on the beach. And might she be the Kwon whose name is written in the cave?

Jack	Jack had given his card to Locke while at the airport. Helen finds hope in ever chance for a miracle, but Locke only despairs. She tears up Jack's card and assures Locke that all she wants is him.
Locke	Locke and Helen share a suburban house and soon will be married. He still has a relationship with his father too. But he hasn't told Helen about the real reason he went to Australia. His secret is revealed at work, when his young manager confronts him with the information that he didn't attend the conference he'd ostensibly gone to Australia for. Locke later tells Helen the truth too. Locke is fired and meets Hurley (see below). When Locke interviews with the temp agency, he finds the manager is Rose. Locke wants a site supervisor job on a construction site, a request she discourages. She tells him she has terminal cancer and suggests he find a job he can do. The job is substitute teacher in a middle school, where in the teacher's lounge he meets fellow teacher Ben Linus.
Hurley	After Locke is fired, he meets Hurley, who, it turns out, owns the company. He sends Locke to the temp agency he also owns to get a job. That's where Locke meets Rose.

Intro: Juliet is still dead, Sayid has come back to life after a dying in the supposedly healing pool at the temple.

Intro: It's the Kate 'n' Claire show this week back in 2004.

Jack	Jack is in full hero mode again. He tends to Sayid, then takes a bullet -- well, a pill -- for him when the temple people want to cure him of his "infection." Thanks to Jack, we learn that the pill was poison.
Kate	Kate manages to leave the temple, saying she'll bring back Sawyer. She outwits her minders and finds Sawyer distraught over losing Juliet. Turns out they both feel it was their fault that Juliet remained on the island, Kate because she convinced Sawyer and Juliet to get off the submarine.
Hurley	Provides the comic relief (or is it foreshadowing) when he asks Sayid, "Are you a zombie?"
Sawyer	Grieving over Juliet's death, Sawyer brandishes a gun and escapes from the temple. He scurries back to the house he and Juliet shared and pulls up the floorboards to find a box, presumably of mementos, but why is it so well hidden? He heads to the dock and while talking with Kate, flings Juliet's ring into the water. He's guilt-ridden because he convinced Juliet to stay on the island, only because he didn't want to be alone.
Sayid	Having returned from the dead, Sayid is understandably shaken. In his weakened state, his temple captors bring him alone to a closed room, where they torture him with electric shocks and a red-hot poker.
Jin	Accompanies Kate to find Sawyer. After she ditches Jin, the Others who'd escorted the pair from the temple begin to attack. He's saved when shots are fired...from feral Claire!

Kate

At LAX, Kate hijacks a cab, with Claire in it. She drops off her passenger in some random nearby location but keeps her luggage, hoping to find change of clothes. When she finds baby toys and a picture of pregnant Claire, something clicks and she goes back to pick her up. Together the women head to the home of the couple who are supposed to adopt Aaron, only to find that they've just split up. At that moment, Claire goes into labor and Kate stays with her at the hospital.
