What if the island has created all these people like in Stanislaw lem's Solaris book? The island senses people around it and creates people to inhabit it. it grants wishes to its creations on it. Each creature has its own memories and thinks it is indepentent but isn't.
Or it is like the Greek Mythology island of the dead. But that would be like purgatory. Do you find this valuable?
