I really like this theory. I don't really think that it's right, possible, but not likely. But it really feels like a plausible explanation for what's going on. The best example of this is Locke. When he believes in the island everything turns out great for him (to a certain extent), but when he has moments of doubt, the island kicks his ass. And of course nothing would ever end up exactly as someone is thinking because of all the other minds affecting it as well. If this theory were true, it could help explain why the Others were 'testing' Walt. He obviously has strong mental powers, so that probably means he could have greater influence on the island. Again, this is a very attractive theory for me.

The idea for the island and the magnetic generator are based on the Montauk Chair, and experiment done supposedly by the government starting in the fourties and more recently in the late seventies where a psychic was trained to descend into a theta brain wave state and through that wavelength, was able to alter reality around him by thought alone. It is similiar to the "forbidden planet theory" where thier minds are adjusting and tuning into the magnetic wavelengths of the island. The more in tune they are, the more they can control their surroundings. However the monster is the "ego" or "Montauk Monster" created to destroy or represent the primal urges of all on the island even from ancient times. It may have been created to destroy all the research as well. The monster is a formless creature, but able to take the shape and abilities of all the fears of those who confront it. The Others have been on the island for a while and have mastered thier egos and thoughts to utilize the island's potential without the bad. This is why they always appear to have the upper hand. The children they are after have great imaginations and or potential to adjust to the island's wavelengths just as well or better than they do. This is why they are after them for some yet to be revealed purpose. They test the others to try and make them overcome their base weaknesses and emotional problems so that if and when they attune to the island's energy, they do not cause it's destruction or the destruction of the others. This is the theory with the least amount of holes in it for me. They have even done an episode or two about the energy of the land and how people can be attuned to it.(Rose and Bernard) I believe that this island has ancient roots going back to Atlantis or more likely Lemuria or Mu. They mastered the energy to the point that they made a great mistake and destroyed themselves. The statue is what was left of them...The monster may be a hold over from those times.
