REALLY COOL THEORY!!!
Jan 3 2007, 6:20 PM EST
My theory about the numbers is that the end of the world was already meant to come due to the valenzetti equation, and when the orientation video says, "You are saving the world by pushing the button". Maybe they really are?? And - maybe - the electro-power is the thing that is meant to end the world, but, by pussing the button every 108 minutes (4,8,15,16,23,42 added together) they are stopping the electro-power to take over the world... 3  out of 4 found this valuable. Hi again, I'm the person who posted the REALLY COOL THEORY!!! So, you may ask what turning the key did. I believe that each time the button is pressed, a small amount of electro-power was sent down through the crust, and into the magma of the earth. I think that turning the key would have let the remaining power out into the sky/air/earth. But I think that the only reason the power left only had the strength to blow up the hatch, is because there was only a bit of electro-power remaining to be sent deep into the earth, which coudn't cause the earth to end. So I now think that the Valenzetti equation has been reset, and the power restored. Please reply! 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

The only problem with your theory is that, scientifically, it makes no sense, and the writers of Lost have said that everything has a scientific explanation.

I believe that the electromagnetic power generated around the Swan was being used to power something, but the excess power had to be let off every now and again. Turning the key shut down whatever it was that was generating the power, and so the danger was over. My reasoning is that if the key solved all the problems, why not just turn the key in the first place instead of messing about with buttons every 108 minutes? Obviously they needed to keep the power running for something, but they included the key as a failsafe in case the power got out of hand. If this is true, then it would be interesting to see what was being powered, and what effect its shutting down will have on the island.

I like most of that reply but it was clearly part of a test as well because if it was truely just a maintainence type of task it would have been automated Do you find this valuable?

It is conceivable (within the Lost universe, at least) that the electromagnetic field in the area would have interfered with the running of an automated button-pusher in an unpredictable way, so they couldn't be sure that it would continue to perform its task at the appropriate time.
