Why does this have to be Jacob? He says that he was recruited to come to the island, which would indicate that there is someone that is his superior.

Nope... He's just Mikhail.
I thought that was pretty clear.
Everyone refers to him by this name,
and when Ben approaches him in "One of Us", he doesn't give him the respect expected for the leader of the Others.
