I believe your right about the island being altantis to a point. I believe Dharma found the island and discovered the stange properties and experiemented on them (The Stations). When the experiments over threw the Dharma crew they were forced to leave behind any staff...pushing the button?! not knowing about the purge incident. There is a higher power at work that brought Desmond whom was the catalyst of the Flight incident. I believe this was meant to happen such as faith (Locke) Another Experiment we havent seen yet is a powerful person whom lead the revolution against the Dharma crew.. he will show up end of this season or beginning of next. this will confirm .
