I don't think they are in purgatory, but they did die. this show relates their story of their past and what would happen in the future if they continued in their life. its their mindset just before they crashed, and what all of their fears evolved into. this is why each one has a different story. its like a dream, where you drift off into sleep and imagine you are in a world of fantasy, then it gets confusing and you end up falling off a cliff
