After watching an rewatching the episodes with Jacob in them, I believe he is actually the evil one of the two. He doesn't seem to mind that the Black Rock people would be killing each other, but the MIB is disgusted with it. I think Jacob brings people to the island for his amusement. MIB revealed to us that Jacob DOES bring people to the island knowing good and well what they do once they get there. MIB seems to be cursed with restrictions as to movement and visibilty. Therefore, he had to find a loophole to bring an end to the madness and havoc that Jacob is causing. Making Jacob the good guy and MIB the bad is too obvious for the writers of LOST, they like to trick us every chance they get.

I think Jacob is good. The smoke "monster" is bad. I just keep thinking of Jacob and the MIB on the beach. MIB came because of the boat and Jacob brought the boat to the island. (I think this is the ship which brought Richard in chains). The question is why? What is the game that they are playing? The MIB says it always ends the same . . . . or something to that effect and Jacob says everything that happens is progress. I just like the Jacob character and with Jack and Hurley with him I just can not think he is evil.
On a fun speculative note - I think Jocob is like the gatekeeper to the afterlife and the island is purgatory.
